Former New York Jets RB Curtis Martin highlights the 2012 National Football League Hall of Fame class announced Saturday, Feb. 4. The Hall of Fame committee also selected former Minnesota Vikings DL Chris Doleman, former Seattle Seahawks DL Cortez Kennedy, former Kansas City Chiefs LT Willie Roaf and former Pittsburgh Steelers C Dermontti Dawson. The senior committee also gave the nod to former Pittsburgh Steelers CB Jack Butler.

Fifteen modern-day finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame were announced Saturday, Jan. 7, and they are joined by two senior nominees. A selection committee in Indianapolis will meet in Indianapolis Feb. 4 to determine the 2012 Hall of Fame class. Elizabeth Merrill, of the Kansas City Star, reports the Kansas City Chiefs would still like retired OT Willie Roaf to reconsider his decision and return to the team. "I will give him ample opportunity to change his mind," said team president/general manager Carl Peterson. "I know what he said, but I also know what he told his agent. His agent thinks that Willie still wants the door open for the opportunity to come back. I'm going to respect that."

Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports retired OT Willie Roaf (Chiefs) spoke publicly Wednesday, Aug. 16, on ESPN2's "Cold Pizza," where he said conjecture the he just wanted to miss training camp was wrong. Roaf said, "I'm not one of those guys who's going to miss all the camp and then come back and play football. I don't think that's fair to my teammates and to the fans and everybody to do it like that. If I'm going to be there, I'm going to be there and be committed to the team." He added that he would consider returning to play in 2007. "I'm done right now. I can't say never say never. You know Deion (Sanders) came back. [Kansas City Chiefs OT] Kyle Turley came back later on. But this year, I'm done."

During his press conference Monday, Aug. 14, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Herman Edwards discussed the status of retired OT Willie Roaf. "I have not spoken to Willie. As I've said, I've been dealing with these guys," Edwards said. "Once training camp breaks which will be next week I'll try to call him and find out what he really wants to do because at that point next week we've got to make some decisions and he's got to make some decisions. Maybe he already has."

Paul Domowitch, of the Philadelphia Daily News, reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Larry Johnson has found new motivation now that he's been handed the starting job. Johnson wants to prove wrong the doubters who believe his numbers will dwindle not that OT Willie Roaf is retired. Johnson said, "They act like we only ran it in one direction last year. Like we ran the ball 99 percent of the time to Willie's side and 1 percent to the other side. With or without Willie, we have a good offensive line. With or without Willie, I'm going to get my yards. Nobody's going to stop me."

David Elfin, of the Washington Times, reports retired OT Willie Roaf has said his decision to retire is final and his decision had nothing to do with head coach Herman Edwards. Roaf said, "I respect my teammates too much to go out there and play at a level that I'm not used to."

Chris Harry, of The Orlando Sentinel, reports the Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly trying to get retired OT Willie Roaf (Chiefs) to return to the team. Head coach Herman Edwards said, "I've heard this before from players. Willie has played a long time in this league, and that's a tough decision. Sometimes you have to sit back after you make a decision like that and ponder it." Some of the team's veteran players are also calling Roaf and asking for him to return.

During his press conference Friday, July 28, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Herman Edwards stressed the fact that he did not want OT Willie Roaf's retirement to serve as a distraction. "What I don't want to do is distract the guys on this football team that are here and just went through their first day of practice. That, to me, is more important than anything because these are the guys that are here, the guys that are getting coached today and the guys that are obviously trying to win a job. That's the most important thing."

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports retired OT Willie Roaf (Chiefs) informed Kansas City Chiefs head coach Herman Edwards and president and general manager Carl Peterson of his plans to retire weeks ago. Roaf said that he told both by telephone of his plans and even sent the Chiefs a letter declaring his intentions. Roaf added, " I thought when I started working out I would be feeling better and I could do the things I want to do. I started running around and my legs were bothering me. I kind of knew right then that I would need to do this. I'm 36 years old. I have to face that fact." Edwards has indicated Roaf would be welcome back if he changes his mind, but Roaf has said his decision is final.

While he was adamant about his desire to play early in the offseason, lingering injuries to his hamstring and knee led to Roaf's decision to retire.

KCChiefs.com reports Kansas City Chiefs president Carl Peterson said OT Willie Roaf is not at training camp because he is taking care of personal reasons, not because of a contract dispute. Peterson added, "Personal reasons, like [RB] Priest Holmes. We do expect him. Herm and I have talked with his agent and the same thing with Priest. These are veteran guys and they don't have to be here the very first days. They have some personal things to take care of as does [CB] Ty Law. We respect that but we do expect Ty very shortly."

Edwards said, "That's the great thing about it, we signed T Kyle Turley and we've got some young guys who will get a lot of opportunities to participate and that is how we are going to go."

He hasn't been around in recent offseason workouts, prompting the rumor that maybe he'd had a change of heart. Head coach Herman Edwards is counting on him being back. "He's fine," Edwards said. "He's with his family, with his kids."

Adam Teicher, writing for the Sporting News, reports the Kansas City Chiefs are encouraged by the progress made by OT Will Svitek in NFL Europe. Svitek has good feet, size and athletic ability and the intelligence to play left tackle. While he still has a lot to learn at the position, he appears to be the best candidate to be the eventual successor to OT Willie Roaf.

Elizabeth Merrill, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs OL Will Svitek started nine games at left tackle for the Frankfurt Galaxy, the team with NFL Europe's top offense, and today he'll be in Dusseldorf to play in the World Bowl. Svitek could eventually be a replacement for OT Willie Roaf in the Chiefs' offense. Svitek won't say that. He's been playing offensive line for just 13 months.

Rick Dean, of the Topeka Capital-Journal, reports Kansas City Chiefs OT Willie Roaf will have a lighter amount of practice than his teammates during training camp and also during the season. Since head coach Herman Edwards does not feel that Roaf needs to be worked with as much as the younger players on the team, the veteran blocker will get more rest to keep his hamstring healthy after an injury-marred 2005 season.

The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs OT Willie Roaf is no longer thinking about retirement. Roaf said, "I feel good. I'm working with the young guys. I'm still strong. I just have to make sure I keep running and take care of my conditioning." Roaf added that he is impressed with head coach Herman Edwards and it was a conversation with him that helped persuade him to return for a 14th season.

Elizabeth Merrill, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs OT Willie Roaf dropped some hints Wednesday, Dec. 28, that he plans to return in 2006. Roaf casually said in a teleconference that there is a "good chance" he'll be back in 2006. "I just don't think he's finished with it," Roaf's mom added. "I don't think he has accomplished what he wanted to accomplish for the team, and he knows that they need him. If he's healthy, he's such an important building block for the team. I think he knows that." "If I'm managed right," Roaf said, "I can play another year or two. But I will take it one year at a time."

Rick Dean, of the Capital Journal, reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil reported Tuesday, Nov. 29, that OT Willie Roaf (hamstring) came through the New England game without re-injuring the hamstring that kept him out of six of the Chiefs' 11 games. Vermeil said Roaf had one of his best games in 2 1/2 years with the Chiefs.

Elizabeth Merrill, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs OT Willie Roaf (hamstring) will attempt to practice Wednesday, Nov. 23. It will mark the first time in nearly a month that the Chiefs will have their starting left tackle back in practice. Roaf has missed six games because of a hamstring pull. Although Roaf will go full speed today, it doesn't guarantee he'll play Sunday against the New England Patriots. "Whether he'll be really 100 percent and play Sunday will be determined how he practices (today) and the rest of the week," head coach Dick Vermeil said.
