Eagles | Reed expected to play a lot Friday on kick returns

Wed, 23 Aug 2006 18:43:16 -0700

Larry O'Rourke, of The Morning Call, reports Philadelphia Eagles S/KR J.R. Reed has reached a critical point in his comeback from a career-threatening leg injury suffered a few days after the Super Bowl in 2005. "We're going to try and see J.R. (Reed) a lot," Philadelphia Eagles special teams coach John Harbaugh said in looking ahead to Friday night's preseason game, Aug. 25, against Pittsburgh at Lincoln Financial Field. "You try and get Reno (Mahe) some reps, but we know what Reno can do and Reno has had so much work he will be fine with whatever he does." In three preseason games, Reed has returned three kickoffs for an average of 20.3 yards, and two punts for an average of 2.5 yards. Reed knows the potential significance of Friday night's game to his career. "There are cuts after this game," Reed said. "There's some pressure there, but I really don't follow it."

Philadelphia Eagles special teams coordinator John Harbaugh believes FS J.R. Reed (leg) looks fine. Harbaugh added, "It's interesting, everybody wants to look for something wrong with J.R. right now and I think we are past that. He looks good. I'm looking; can he go left, can he go right, can he make this cut, can he make that cut? I think, the way I'm looking at it, its time to evaluate him for what he is as a player for what he does. And just put him right up against the other guys and see how he compares because he looks fine."

Eagles | Reed getting ready for first hit

Mon, 24 Jul 2006 06:02:04 -0700

Paul Domowitch, of the Philadelphia Daily News, reports the Philadelphia Eagles will don full battle gear and hold their first "live" practice of training camp Tuesday morning, July 25. Very early on in that practice, Eagles S J.R. Reed (leg) will find out whether his football career has been revived or whether it is over. "I'll know (after) the first hit," the third-year safety and kick returner said, after the last of three days of non-contact practices for rookies and selected veterans. Reed is trying to make an against-the-odds comeback from a freak leg injury 17 months ago that sidelined him the entire 2005 season. He damaged the peroneal nerve behind his left knee while trying to jump a fence near his Florida home. The peroneal nerve affects the use of the lower leg and foot. "He seems pretty good," head coach Andy Reid said. "It's hard to (notice) him favoring that leg at all. It's a unique situation; quite a story." In January, Reed considered having surgery on his leg, but eventually decided against it because it likely would have eliminated any chance of playing football again.

Wed, 14 Jun 2006 06:55:34 -0700

Les Bowen, of the Philadelphia Daily News, reports Philadelphia Eagles special teams coordinator John Harbaugh discusses FS J.R. Reed's (knee) progress in his return from career-threatening nerve damage behind his knee. Harbaugh said, "Just in the shorts, I haven't noticed anything different from what he was 2 years ago. He looks just as fast, just as quick... When he has to change direction to make a tackle, returning a kick and making a cut... coming off the hash, making a play on the sideline, that's probably where we'll see it, if he still has the same burst, the change of direction skill. He looks good right now."

Sat, 13 May 2006 18:15:47 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid gave his assessment of FS J.R. Reed (leg) Saturday, May 13. Reid said, "We are observing. He is coming off a very serious injury. He probably runs better than he walks right now, which is unusual. He has a brace that has been made for his ankle that allows that foot to spring back into a position where he can function very well on the football field. We just have to see how well he can do that."

Wed, 10 May 2006 12:29:49 -0700

Dave Spadaro, of PhiladelphiaEagles.com, reports Philadelphia Eagles KR/S J.R. Reed (leg) has been cleared to join the team at their post-draft minicamp, an amazing turnaround for a player that was told recently that he might not ever play again. After an impressive rookie season returning kicks for the team, he damaged the peroneal nerve in his knee in the offseason, causing him to have trouble using his right foot. However, with extensive rehabilitation, combined with a custom brace that gives more support to the foot, Reed feels that he is finally able to play football again.
