Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski mentioned OFs Don Kelly, Ezequiel Carrera and Trevor Crowe as candidates to receive more playing time with the injury to OF Andy Dirks (back).

Detroit Tigers OF Andy Dirks (back) will undergo surgery on his back and miss 12 weeks.
Fantasy Tip: Dirks was in line for platoon duty with Rajai Davis in left field this year. That could now fall to Don Kelly, at least in the interim. Davis looks more intriguing now since it's unclear if Kelly would be a straight up platoon partner. Depending on the nature of Dirks' surgery, this could put a damper on his entire season.

The Detroit Tigers agreed to a one-year, $1 million deal with OF Don Kelly to avoid arbitration Monday, Dec. 2.

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Tuesday, Oct. 15, that he is going to sleep on the possibility of using OF Don Kelly in center field for Game 4 of the American League Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox.

The Detroit Tigers will use the same batting order for Game 2 of the American League Championship Series that they used for Game 5 of the American League Divisional Series against the Oakland Athletics. INF/OF Don Kelly will start in left field and SS/OF Jhonny Peralta will start at shortstop, with INF Jose Iglesias available off the bench.

The Detroit Tigers don't plan to rush OF Austin Jackson (hamstring) back from the disabled list. On Tuesday, May 28, Jim Leyland said Jackson was "doing better" but that the team was uncertain when he'd start a rehab assignment. Jackson has been throwing and swinging a little in the batting cages. He hasn't done much on-field work, though.
Fantasy Tip: Don Kelly and Avisail Garcia have been holding down the fort well enough that Detroit wants to take its time with A-Jax. Keep stashing him on your disabled list or bench but be prepared to wait a few more weeks until he resurfaces.

Detroit Tigers OF Andy Dirks has some experience in center field and OF Avisail Garcia can also play center, having started 44 games there last summer with Double-A Eerie. OF Torii Hunter has plenty of experience in the position, too, so the Tigers have plenty of options to play center field with OF Austin Jackson (hamstring) on the disabled list. OF Don Kelly started the last two games in center field over the weekend. Garcia's natural role is as a corner outfielder, though, and he hit .432 (16-for-37) with a double, a home run and four RBIs in eight games with Triple-A Toledo.
Fantasy Tip: Kelly was likely a temporary solution to the problem over the weekend. Now that Jackson is out for two weeks, expect either Dirks or Hunter to man center field regularly, allowing Garcia to play a corner outfield spot. Garcia may not play every day, however, but for those speculating on increased playing time in cavernous mixed leagues, Garcia is your best bet over Kelly or Matt Tuiasosopo.

The Detroit Tigers placed OF Austin Jackson (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring pull Monday, May 13, and recalled OF Avisail Garcia from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move. Jackson's DL stint will be retroactive to May 12.
Fantasy Tip: Don Kelly started in center field yesterday with Jackson out, but he might have just been a one-game replacement. Although he doesn't have the range he once had, Torii Hunter could slide over to center, which would allow the Tigers to place Garcia in right field. Garcia's season is off to a slow start thanks to a heel injury, but he represents the most upside out of the group that includes Kelly and Matt Tuiasosopo. Andy Dirks should continue to see consistent playing time in left. The outfield arrangement could be very fluid, though, so deep mixed leaguers speculating on increased playing time might have to be patient.
