"Goose" Gossage pitched for nine teams over 22 years and had 310 career saves and 1,502 strikeouts in 1,002 games. He wore a New York Yankees hat at the ceremony. He is the fifth reliever to be inducted, joining Bruce Sutter, Hoyt Wilhelm, Rollie Fingers, and Dennis Eckersley.

Bloom, of MLB.com, reports former major league CL Rich Gossage said he believes New York Yankees SP Joba Chamberlain is more valuable to the team as a relief pitcher and not as a starting pitcher. "I think he's more valuable, personally, in the bullpen. To utilize him three or four days out of the week is more valuable than starting him. And the way starters are used today -- now it's five innings. Six innings is a quality start. They can get most anybody to be a starter with the emphasis on those setup guys, who have really been instrumental. You don't win a World [Series] championship without a great, great bullpen. So that's where his value is," Gossage said.

"I'm old school, I'm sorry. I didn't see [Dellucci] celebrating when he hit the home run… That's just not the Yankee way, what Joba did. Let everyone else do that stuff, but not a Yankee."

Those who received substantial votes, but still fell short of the 75 percent mark required, include OF Jim Rice, CL Rich Gossage, OF Andre Dawson and SP Bert Blyleven.
Tue, 04 Jan 2005 11:19:16 -0800 The Associated Press reports CL Bruce Sutter, appearing on the Hall of Fame ballot for the 12th time, received 344 votes (66.7 percent), up from 301 last year but 43 shy of what was needed this time. He was followed by OF Jim Rice (307), CL Rich Gossage (285) and OF Andre Dawson (270). OF Willie McGee, also on the ballot for the first time, received 26 votes, exactly at the 5 percent cutoff to avoid being dropped in future years. OF Darryl Strawberry, another first-time eligible, got six votes and OF Pete Rose, ineligible for the ballot because of his lifetime ban from baseball, received nine write-in votes, six fewer than last year and his lowest total. Rose, who admitted last year that he bet on the Cincinnati Reds while managing them in the late 1980s, has been written in on 239 of 6,687 ballots (3.6 percent) over 14 years.
