ESPN.com's John Clayton reports the Kansas City Chiefs are expected to release veteran LB Marvcus Patton after June 1st. Patton is also contemplating retirement.

Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com New England Patriots CB Ty Law, Kansas City Chiefs LB Marvcus Patton, Philadelphia Eagles return specialist Brian Mitchell and former Chiefs WR Dainon Hughes were victims in so-called “identity fraud” cases. A source termed the players’ losses “somewhat substantial,” most of them coming via fraudulent credit card charges. At least one man is in custody.

The Kansas City Star reports the Kansas City Chiefs are in better financial shape this year than they were last year. The Chiefs are $1.6 million under the NFL’s $71.7 million salary cap. They are trying to free up some cap room by restructuring LB Donnie Edwards’ contract. They have already restructured LB Marvcus Patton’s contract and will probably release WR Derrick Alexander. Edwards, Patton and Alexander count $16.5 million against the salary cap.

Sportsline.com reports the Kansas City Chiefs have come to terms on a six-year contract with LB Marvcus Patton. The deal is worth about $10.5 million.

Adam Teicher reports for the Kansas City Star two Kansas City Chiefs starting LBs, Donnie Edwards and Marvcus Patton, could join the list of potential free agents from the team. Each has a clause allowing him to void his contract, but neither has yet done so. Edwards is due a $2.8 million roster bonus on March 1 and a 2002 salary of $2.9 million. Patton is due a $1 million bonus and a $2 million salary.

Rick Dean reports for the Capital-Journal although it's early, the Kansas City Chiefs defense lined up this way at Friday's mini-camp: Eric Hicks and Duane Clemons were at defensive end with Steve Martin and John Browning playing tackle (as starter Dan Williams watched from the sideline while recovering from off-season foot surgery). Lew Bush, Marvcus Patton and Donnie Edwards were at linebacker with Eric Warfield and newcomer Ray Crockett (Broncos) at the corners. Jerome Woods and Greg Wesley were the safeties.

The Kansas City Star reports Kansas City Chiefs OL Marcus Spears opened mini-camp as the starting left guard in place of Jeff Blackshear. Spears' main competition will come from Blackshear and Donald Willis. LB Lew Bush opened both practice sessions at strong-side linebacker. The team then moved Mike Maslowski to the middle where he is backing up Marvcus Patton. Larry Atkins, who just moved to linebacker from safety, is backing up Bush. DE Eric Hicks and RB Priest Holmes had the mini-camp's first fight. Coach Dick Vermeil expects undrafted free agent PK Lawrence Tynes to challenge Todd Peterson for the starting PK job.

The KC Star reports the salary cap moves by the Kansas City Chiefs left them with more than $6 million to spend as the free agent signing period began early Friday morning. "We're cap-rich," president Carl Peterson said. As previously reported, G Will Shields re-signed earlier today an his contract is a six-year, $26 million contract that includes a $7 million signing bonus and a 2001 salary of $500,000. Other players not previously reported restructured their deals to help the cap situation, DL Dan Williams and Steve Martin, and LB Marvcus Patton. Coach Dick Vermeil said the Chiefs would not pursue Cincinnati RB Corey Dillon in free agency.

How did the Chiefs depth chart shape up at minicamp? On offense, the line was from left to right, Glenn Parker, Dave Szott, Tim Grunhard, Will Shields, Victor Riley and Tony Gonzalez at tight end. WRs Kevin Lockett and Joe Horn split time playing for the injured Derrick Alexander across from Andre Rison. The RB was Bam Morris while Kimble Anders played fullback, with Elvis Grbac at QB. On defense, Ty Parten played left defensive end for John Browning, who as reported earlier, was sitting out with a knee injury. Chester McGlockton and Dan Williams played DT with Leslie O'Neal at right end. The LBs were Derrick Thomas over the tight end, Marvcus Patton in the middle and Donnie Edwards on the weak side. Cris Dishman and James Hasty played CB with Reggie Tongue and Jerome Woods at safety.

The Saint Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Rams have agreed to a four-year contract with Patriots Free Agent LB Todd Collins. No financial terms were released on the deal. The Rams apparently picked Collins, who had also visited the Giants and Raiders, over Washington LB Marvcus Patton. His signing means the Rams still have to make some moves to meet the league's salary cap requirements.
