Mets | James Loney acquired from San Diego

Sat, 28 May 2016 11:41:14 -0700

The New York Mets have acquired 1B James Loney from the San Diego Padres, in exchange for cash considerations.

Fantasy Tip: The 32-year-old Loney was batting .342 with two home runs and 28 RBI over 158 at-bats for Class AAA El Paso in the Padres' organization after being let go by the Tampa Bay Rays during spring training. He appears likely to receive the bulk of the playing time at first base against right-handed pitching while Lucas Duda (back) is on the disabled list. Loney's fantasy appeal is limited to NL-only fantasy leagues due to his lack of power.

Mets | New York interested in James Loney

Tue, 24 May 2016 09:25:13 -0700

The New York Mets have "some curiosity" about San Diego Padres 1B James Loney, according to a source. Loney can opt out with Class AAA El Paso for a major league contract. The Mets are not interested in New York Yankees 1B Nick Swisher, who is also in the minors.

Fantasy Tip: Loney has always been a line-drive hitter that can carry a respectable average, but he lacks home runs (career-high 15 home runs back in 2007). He probably would only play first base against right-handed pitchers for the Mets, and he'd be a short-term stopgap with Lucas Duda (back) hurt. If the Mets land him, he'd probably only be attractive to those in NL-only leagues.

Rays | James Loney released

Sun, 03 Apr 2016 11:51:54 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney was released Sunday, April 3.

Fantasy Tip: Loney probably will receive interest from other teams but may not be able to find a major league offer. Loney could be an option in an AL-only or NL-only league but should be avoided by mixed league owners.

Rays | James Loney won't make squad

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 12:55:57 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney has been told that he will not make the opening day roster.

Fantasy Tip: The Rays will now likely either trade or release the veteran first baseman. Loney could catch on elsewhere, and he makes fine contact and hits plenty of line drives, but his struggles against lefties will cap his upside and likely keep him in a platoon role, at best.

Rays | James Loney done with Tampa Bay?

Sun, 27 Mar 2016 05:25:02 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney is not expected to be on the 25-man roster for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: Loney has been leapfrogged by Logan Morrison and Steve Pearce who were both brought in this offseason to add more pop to the lineup. Loney will likely carry fantasy value in cavernous mixed and single-universe leagues at some point this season, but he currently is nothing more than a low-end stash candidate. His batting average, home run and RBI totals have dropped in two consecutive seasons, after all.

Rays | James Loney the odd-man out?

Tue, 16 Feb 2016 16:05:44 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney could be a candidate for a trade after all of Tampa's offseason acquisitions. Plus, Loney's 2016 salary is second-highest on the team ($8 million). However, Loney is heading to spring training with the thought that he remains the primary first baseman. Loney ranked in the bottom three of 27 first baseman that played 100 games or more last year in home runs and RBI.

Fantasy Tip: Loney has a smooth stroke from the left side, which produces plenty of line drives and a high average. However, for a first baseman, he doesn't have enough power to roster for fantasy owners outside of AL-only leagues. And that's if he continues to see enough time against righties.

Rays | Corey Dickerson could be primary DH

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 07:32:35 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays OF Corey Dickerson is expected to serve as the club's primary designated hitter if 1B James Loney is traded. OFs Desmond Jennings, Kevin Kiermaier and Steven Souza Jr. would play left field, center field and right field respectively, with OF Brandon Guyer serving as the fourth outfielder and a starting option versus left-handed pitching.

Fantasy Tip: Dickerson hit .304 with 10 home runs and 31 RBIs in 65 games for the Rockies last season and said he would have no problem serving as a DH. He could fall to the middle rounds of drafts for AL-only and deep mixed leagues because of the move away from Coors Field.

Rays | Richie Shaffer could be odd man out

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 09:04:14 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays INF Richie Shaffer could find himself in danger of not making the 25-man roster, with Steve Pearce, Logan Morrison and James Loney expected to share time at first base and designated hitter.

Fantasy Tip: The soon-to-be 25-year-old Shaffer batted just .189 last season but showed a promising amount of power, with three doubles and four home runs in 74 at-bats. Pearce and Morrison are expected to get the lion's share of the playing time and Loney could have all or part of the $8 million remaining on his contract eaten so that he can be moved to another team.

Rays | Tampa Bay sitting five regulars vs. Jays

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 15:12:48 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OFs Kevin Kiermaier and Steven Souza, 1B James Loney and C J.P. Arencibia are not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP Mark Buehrle Friday, Oct. 2.

Fantasy Tip: With the Tampa Bay lineup missing a number of key cogs, there isn't a lot to be excited about from the Rays Friday. FantasyScore players could target Evan Longoria ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) because of his .344/.395/.576 slash line against southpaws this season, but otherwise, you're likely betting fading the entire lineup.

Rays | James Loney, J.P. Arencibia sitting

Sun, 27 Sep 2015 08:03:29 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney and C J.P. Arencibia are not in the starting lineup against the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday, Sept. 27.

Fantasy Tip: Richie Shaffer ($3,600, 7.2% of cpa) and Luke Maile ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) draw into the lineup for Tampa, but they're nothing more than low-priced dice rolls at FantasyScore Sunday. You should likely aim higher. Make sure to avoid Loney ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) and Arencibia ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) in all fantasy formats, too.
