Rays | James Loney injury update

Tue, 26 May 2015 04:44:28 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney (finger) could miss four to six weeks due to a broken finger. Loney was placed on the 15-day disabled list over the weekend.

Fantasy Tip: This would sideline Loney ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) until around the end of June and quite possibly until the All-Star break. It's safe to drop Loney in regular-league lineups and avoid his selection in daily leagues for now.

Rays | James Loney to DL

Mon, 25 May 2015 12:57:35 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney (finger) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, May 25, with a broken finger. In corresponding moves, the Rays recalled SS Tim Beckham and 2B Jake Elmore from Class AAA Durham.

Fantasy Tip: Loney ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) should be removed from further consideration for now. It is not known how long he will be out.

Rays | James Loney sprains finger

Mon, 25 May 2015 05:55:10 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney (finger) suffered a sprained left middle finger Sunday, May 24, while sliding against the Oakland Athletics. He was wearing a brace after the game and will be evaluated further Monday, May 25.

Fantasy Tip: Loney ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) is a roster-filling play most days and offers little in the way of power but contributes in average. Avoid him until more is known about his status.

Rays | James Loney sporting hot streak

Thu, 21 May 2015 06:12:49 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney is batting .458 (11-for-24) during a seven-game hitting streak.

Fantasy Tip: The streak has also returned a run and five RBI from Loney ($2,600, 5.2% of cap). His lack of power makes him a low-end first base option in all formats, but FantasyScore players can find reliable production at a discount, if they're looking to spend up elsewhere. Loney sports a .293 batting average over his past 1242 at-bats and can help owners in deep mixed leagues in the category.

Rays | James Loney out of lineup

Sun, 10 May 2015 08:31:06 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney is out of the lineup Sunday, May 10, against the Texas Rangers. OF Kevin Kiermaier will draw back into the starting lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Kiermaier ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) has hit just .224 against left-handed pitchers for his career and will have his FantasyScore potential lowered even further while batting in the eighth spot of the order. Owners should be looking elsewhere in this price range.

Rays | Tampa shakes up lineup

Mon, 04 May 2015 15:41:33 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SS Asdrubal Cabrera, who is hitless in his last 14 at-bats, was dropped from third to seventh in the batting order Monday, May 4. OF David DeJesus, who is 0-for-17 lately, was dropped to fifth in the lineup. 1B James Loney has moved to the third spot.

Fantasy Tip: Cabrera ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) and DeJesus ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) should be looked at as weaker FantasyScore plays tonight, even against a right-handed pitcher. Loney ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) is a midrange first base play tonight while seeing a bump into the heart of the batting order.

Rays | James Loney back with a bang

Sat, 25 Apr 2015 19:19:35 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney is 3-for-6 with a home run, two doubles, three runs scored and three RBIs in two games since being activated from the 15-day disabled list Friday, April 24.

Fantasy Tip: Loney ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) went on the DL after the first game of the season, but his timing doesn't seem to have suffered during the layoff. He may not start Sunday with lefty Mark Buehrle on the mound, but Loney could be worth a flier at FantasyScore the next time the Rays face a right-handed starter.

Rays | James Loney activated from DL

Fri, 24 Apr 2015 08:56:28 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney (oblique) was removed from the 15-day disabled list Friday, April 24. 1B Allan Dykstra was sent back to the minors Thursday, April 23.

Fantasy Tip: Loney ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) should return to the starting first base duties now that he's back to full health. At FantasyScore, he should really only be an option for your lineups when facing right-handed pitchers, who he hit .304 (130-for-428) with eight of his nine home runs against in 2014.

Rays | James Loney takes BP

Tue, 21 Apr 2015 14:17:03 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney (oblique) took batting practice Tuesday, April 21, and he thinks he'll need at-bats in a minor league game before rejoining the team this weekend.

Fantasy Tip: Loney ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) will likely move back into the starting first base role when he returns this weekend. That'll mean Allan Dykstra ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) will lose most of his already weak value, and he could be sent back to the minors.

Rays | James Loney likely a week away

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 15:37:33 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney (oblique) is expected to be ready to return from the disabled list when eligible Wednesday, April 22, according to manager Kevin Cash.

Fantasy Tip: While Loney ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) is a low-end first basemen in seasonal leagues, he profiles more favorably for FantasyScore contests, especially against right-handed pitchers and at his price point. For his career, Loney has a .296/.352/.437 slash line against righties. In favorable matchups, view Loney as a great source of cap relief.
