Oakland Athletics SP Joe Blanton left Triple-A Sacramento after just two appearances, and whether he intends to pitch again is unclear. He allowed six earned runs over 10 2/3 innings in two games for the River Cats.

The Oakland Athletics have reportedly signed free-agent RP Joe Blanton (Angels) to a minor league deal.
Fantasy Tip: Blanton was signed purely as rotation insurance, since the A's lost two of their starters to begin the season.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim released RP Joe Blanton Wednesday, March 26.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Joe Blanton moved from the first base side of the pitching rubber to the third base side Wednesday, March 12, and had excellent results in his outing. Blanton allowed one hit in five innings in a split-squad game against the Texas Rangers. He has "a chance to create angles both to lefties and righties, especially with his fastball to be able to get it cross-corner and down, or in, to a lefty," manager Mike Scioscia said. However, Blanton is unlikely to surpass SP Tyler Skaggs for the final rotation spot.
Fantasy Tip: Blanton may find himself on another team if he doesn't make the rotation out of camp, unless the Halos plan to use him as a long reliever, which is unlikely. Blanton shouldn't be on your fantasy radar.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia said that the team could open the year with eight relief pitchers, signaling the fact that he's not confident that a youth-filled rotation will be able to go deep into games early on. SPs Garrett Richards, Hector Santiago and Tyler Skaggs haven't thrown more than 158 innings in any of the past three years. RP Joe Blanton would benefit from such a move, since he'd likely be released if he doesn't make the team.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Joe Blanton thinks he corrected a major mechanical flaw last September, long after he was demoted to the bullpen after a disastrous season. The Angels aren't counting on a bounce back, but an injury to SP Mark Mulder (Achilles') makes Blanton important for rotation depth. "Joe needs to make adjustments and put his best foot forward. He had a terrible season, but when he's throwing to the best of his ability he's capable of getting major league hitters out," manager Mike Scioscia said Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SPs Garrett Richards and Hector Santiago are virtual locks for the starting rotation this year, but SP Tyler Skaggs will have to prove he's worthy of a spot this spring. If not, the Halos will look to SPs Joe Blanton or Mark Mulder as a stopgap until he's ready. "But our season doesn't hinge on whether or not Tyler Skaggs is able to make the staff out of Spring Training and become a star on a dime," general manager Jerry Dipoto added. "We're going to give him the proper time to adjust."

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards will enter the rotation with SP Joe Blanton being moved to the bullpen. Richards will make the start against the Oakland Athletics Saturday, July 27. Blanton has 13 losses and an ERA of 5.66 in 20 starts this year, and he leads the majors in hits allowed (157) and homers allowed (24).
Fantasy Tip: Richards deserves to be owned in all AL-only leagues and deep enough mixed leagues if you're looking for a pitching spark. How long he'll remain in the rotation is unknown, though, with Jason Vargas (armpit) working his way back. If Richards pitches well enough, though, it might be hard for the Halos to banish him back to the bullpen.

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Joe Blanton will get a chance to start Tuesday, June 18, against the Seattle Mariners. His turn in the rotation was skipped over the weekend.
Fantasy Tip: Blanton is 1-10 with a 5.87 ERA in 13 starts this season, and he has allowed three or more earned runs in 10 of his outings. He wasn't half bad in his only start against the Mariners this season, allowing three runs in six innings with five strikeouts in a loss April 27, but he isn't worth using in anything but the deepest of AL-only fantasy leagues at this point.
