ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports free agent DT James Jones, cut by the Lions just before the season began, recently shot down offers from the Oakland Raiders. While Jones was tempted to join them because of their playoff potential, he's looking to play for more than the veteran minimum. The Raiders, looking for help on the defensive line, took a look at free agent DT Dan Williams, who was just cut by the Chiefs.

ESPN.com's John Clayton reports the Oakland Raiders worked out former Kansas City Chiefs DT Dan Williams earlier today. The Raiders defensive line lost DE Trace Armstrong to a season-ending injury and DTs Rod Coleman and Grady Jackson are banged up.

The Kansas City Star reports today's release of DT Dan Williams by the Kansas City Chiefs will cost the team $4.6 million against their salary cap next season. The Chiefs gave Williams bonus money totaling $7.8 million and salary totaling about $1 million in the last three seasons. President/GM Carl Peterson acknowledged the 1999 decision to sign Williams, who sat out the previous season when he couldn't come to contract terms with the Chiefs, was a mistake.

The Kansas City Star reports three starters were among the Kansas City Chiefs players who sat out last night's pre-season loss. The team played without LB Donnie Edwards (ankle), WR Derrick Alexander (Achilles' tendon) and C Casey Wiegmann (appendicitis). Other injured players who did not play were DT Dan Williams, LBs Mike Maslowski and Larry Atkins and CB Pat Dennis. Todd Collins (ribs and shoulder) suited up but only as the emergency quarterback.

The Kansas City Star reports Kansas City Chiefs DT Dan Williams had the MRI on his knee come back showing no new injury, but coach Dick Vermeil still wasn't optimistic Williams would play in the opener. "He has an old football knee," Vermeil said. "I don't think he's going to be ready for the opener. I'm not planning on it." The team is hopeful Williams can practice on a limited basis this week.

The Kansas City Star reports the Kansas City Chiefs are expected to be without the following injured players for tomorrow night's pre-season game with the Jaguars: DTs Dan Williams (foot and knee) and Terdell Sands (foot), LBs Donnie Edwards (ankle) and Larry Atkins (ankle), S Brad Trout (head), TE Jason Dunn (knee) and FB George Layne (ankle). Coach Dick Vermeil said WR Chris Thomas (calf) could play some.

The Kansas City Star reports Kansas City Chiefs DT Dan Williams may not be ready for the regular season opener. Williams has suffered from a series of foot, knee and thigh injuries during an eight-year NFL career. On Tuesday, coach Dick Vermeil for the first time expressed doubt about Williams' return. "I don't know about Dan Williams," Vermeil said after the Tuesday morning practice. Williams declined to comment Tuesday. If Williams is unable to go when the Raiders come to KC to open the season, the Chiefs could place him on the PUP list without taking up an extra roster spot. The Chiefs will continue to start John Browning and Steve Martin at tackle while Williams sits.

The Kansas City Chiefs official training camp site reports TE Mikhael Ricks, FBs George Layne and Jermaine Williams and rookie WR Marvin Minnis all missed practice on Wednesday morning. DT Dan Williams did some individual work during practice. He's trying to make it back from foot surgery.
