Cubs | David DeJesus to DL

Sun, 16 Jun 2013 22:57:54 -0700

Updating previous items, Chicago Cubs OF David DeJesus (shoulder) will get an MRI on his sprained right shoulder on Monday, June 17, and he figures to miss at least three weeks under a best-case scenario. The Cubs officially put DeJesus on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, June 15. Manager Dale Sveum said DeJesus will have to go on a minor league rehab stint after he recovers.

Fantasy Tip: Well, there goes any hope the Cubs had to get prospects for DeJesus at the trade deadline. DeJesus had a .260 average with six home runs at the time of his injury, a nice number on an otherwise dismal Cubs squad. If he recovers in time the Cubs may still try to trade him, but he is likely to remain a Cub for the remainder of the year thanks to this.

Angels | Dale Sveum says Albert Pujols isn't the same

Wed, 05 Jun 2013 16:04:21 -0700

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said that it has become easier to pitch to Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1B Albert Pujols these days. "He's come down to being more human, that's for sure," Sveum said. "At one point in his career, you pitch around him, you walk him, you do all kinds of things. But you didn't want him to beat you. Now he's a little more able to be pitched to." Pujols is hitting only .244 with nine home runs and 35 RBIs this season.

Fantasy Tip: Age and nagging foot and knee problems have slowed Pujols down this year. The plantar fasciitis in his foot will likely bother him for the rest of the year, which has to be a concern to his fantasy owners. Pujols can still be productive, but the days of 30-plus home runs are likely in the past for him.

Cubs | Alfonso Soriano won't move down in order

Thu, 02 May 2013 00:20:34 -0700

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said he has no intention of moving OF Alfonso Soriano down in the order because of his lack of production in April. Soriano went into the final game of the month with one home run and two RBIs, hitting .095 with runners in scoring position. Sveum has used Soriano in the clean-up spot in all 25 of Soriano's starts.

Cubs | Sticking with closer-by-committee

Tue, 30 Apr 2013 15:36:50 -0700

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said the team will likely stick with a closer-by-committee approach when RP Kyuji Fujikawa (forearm) returns from the disabled list. Fujikawa could have a rehab outing with Triple-A Iowa Sunday, May 5. RP Kevin Gregg picked up his fourth save of the year Monday, April 29. "I got (a closer)," Sveum said. "I just don't know who it's going to be every night."

Fantasy Tip: This is probably a situation to avoid for fantasy baseball if you can help it. Right now, Gregg, Carlos Marmol and Fujikawa shoulad all be owned in deep mixed formats if you're speculating for saves. Marmol could easily win back the job if he gains enough trust from Sveum, but there's no telling how long that might take.

Cubs | Manager stays quiet on who closer will be daily

Mon, 29 Apr 2013 17:08:11 -0700

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum does not inform his relief pitchers who his designated closer will be on a daily bases, and instead goes with the best matchup. "It's been working," Sveum said Monday. "I'm not going to say it's a fix-all and that you don't want to name a closer. You definitely don't want to rock the boat when things are going good in the back of the bullpen when everybody is healthy and ready to go that night. It could be one of four guys. It depends on the matchups."

Cubs | Dale Sveum has support from brass

Wed, 24 Apr 2013 12:07:16 -0700

Chicago Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer expressed his support for manager Dale Sveum despite the team losing 12 of their last 15 games. "We're not the most talented team in the league right now; we're trying to build to get there," Hoyer said. "But as we get there, we can't continue to make the kind of mistakes we're making. That's on us. Dale has our complete support. That (his job security) shouldn't be what he's thinking about in the least."

Cubs | Seeking rotation help in free agency

Thu, 27 Sep 2012 23:07:29 -0700

The Chicago Cubs have some need at third base and in the bullpen entering the 2012-13 offseason, but the overwhelming need is in the rotation, where only SP Jeff Samardzija and, presumably, SP Matt Garza are assured of returning. "We're obviously going to be active in the free-agent market. I don't think there's any question about that,'' general manager Jed Hoyer said. The front office has meetings planned with manager Dale Sveum, coaches and players over the next week and into the days immediately following the season.

Cubs | Recommending winter ball for Tony Campana, Josh Vitters

Tue, 25 Sep 2012 23:22:52 -0700

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum has recommended to 3B Josh Vitters and OF Tony Campana that they consider playing winter ball. "The more you play, the better you're going to be," Sveum said. "I think some people nowadays use the winters too much sometimes to work out and rest when you can go play instructional league or [Arizona Fall League] or winter leagues. There's no substitute for playing."
