Now, Beisel could be in jeopardy of making the 53-man roster. Beisel's situation began to change Aug. 1, when he missed practice. Beisel was sidelined for five straight workouts, then came back for a stretch and played as a backup in the preseason opener. He then missed another string of practices, and the second preseason game, before returning to practice this week. "Not being on the field has definitely hurt me," he said.

Beisel hopes the extra weight will benefit him after he struggled in his first season with the Patriots. "Last year was a challenge, with how the season unfolded for me. It was frustrating. But it doesn't change (anything)," said Beisel, who is slated to be the starting inside linebacker next to LB Tedy Bruschi in the team's 3-4 defense. "For me, year in and year out, every off-season my job is to come back here and try to be the best I can be at what I want to do. ... I think I've put myself in a good position this offseason. Now it's just a matter of continuing to focus on the things that you can get better at."

Beisel has also spent time with new linebackers coach Matt Patricia. Beisel said, "``I think it's going to be really good [with Matt]. That's one thing they talk about around here, when people come and people go, the transition is always smooth. I think it's been seamless so far." "I've been working real hard, cut down some of my body fat some, and was able to put on eight, nine pounds," he said earlier this week during a break from the team's offseason program at Gillette Stadium. "You get a little thicker, increase some speed and strength, and just become a better overall player."
