I would definitely put him in the starting-to-rise-a-little-bit category."

Patriots | Warfield learning new things on defense

Mon, 31 Jul 2006 06:14:10 -0700

Tom E. Curran, of the Providence Journal, reports New England Patriots CB Eric Warfield was surprised to learn the defense in New England is different than any other he has played under. "What they expect of personnel, your position on the field, your position on a certain route, the way you leverage receivers," Warfield explained. "I thought coming in, the only thing that would change was the terminology. But some things are different here with, like I said, positioning. (Safety) Tebucky Jones has helped me out a lot and helped me with adjustments. And the young guys, I watch how they play it. I'm not ashamed to say I'll sit back and watch a young guy. Anyone considered to be better than me, I'm going to watch."

Chiefs | Team remains interested in Law; money the driving force

Thu, 13 Jul 2006 16:58:29 -0700

Elizabeth Merrill, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson said the team remains interested in free agent CB Ty Law (Jets). "We have an interest in Ty Law," said the Chiefs president/general manager. "But obviously, it has to be based upon economics. To this point, we certainly haven't been able to get together with his representatives on a contract, and we also note that no one else has, either. Sometimes patience is difficult, but it is also a pragmatic thing to do." The Chiefs have been searching for a replacement for longtime starting CB Eric Warfield, who was cut in March. The Chiefs currently have about $8 million in cap space, but Peterson said the club would need a good chunk of the money in the coming months.

Patriots | Warfield seeking starting role

Sun, 25 Jun 2006 15:20:45 -0700

Richard Thomas, of the Texarkana Gazette, reports New England Patriots CB Eric Warfield will be seeking a starting spot in training camp. The Kansas City Chiefs cut Warfield, after eight seasons with the team, March 3. "Kansas City wanted to go in a different direction, and I have nothing bad to say about their organization, coaches or players," Warfield said Friday, June 23. Warfield, who is currently listed as the No. 2 left cornerback for New England, doesn't plan on being a backup. "I asked them what my role would be, and they said 'Whatever you make it.' That's why I think it I can go out there and show them what I'm capable of doing, then I can earn a starting spot," Warfield said. CB Ellis Hobbs and Warfield (6-0, 190) will likely compete for the starting left cornerback spot. Warfield has played only corner in his pro career, but says the Patriots have informed him he could be moved to safety if the team needs to move him. Warfield said he will continue offseason workouts until July 7, then get a couple of weeks off before he reports to training camp on July 28.

Patriots | Police and courts: E. Warfield

Tue, 30 May 2006 09:57:27 -0700

Dan Margolies, of the Kansas City Star, reports a lawsuit against New England Patriots CB Eric Warfield has been thrown out of court. A Jackson County judge threw out a wrongful-death lawsuit against him, entering summary judgment against the plaintiffs, James R. and Scheryl J. Quirk and the estate of Breanna Zeiler. The Quirks were the parents of Shelbie Lynn Quirk, and Zeiler was her minor daughter. Shelbie was driving her 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo about 5 a.m. March 25, 2001, when it spun out of control, hit a guardrail and came to rest in the northbound lane of Interstate 435 north of Gregory Boulevard. A moment later, a northbound Chevy Blazer rammed the driver's side door of her car, and Quirk died at the scene. The Blazer was leased to Warfield and driven by Alexander L. Jones, who lived at Warfield's Lee's Summit house. The suit charged that Jones had been drinking the day of the accident and that Warfield knew, or should have known, that he was drinking but nonetheless entrusted him with the vehicle. In a sworn affidavit, Warfield said he was in Chicago that day and had specifically told Jones not to drive the Blazer. Jones backed up Warfield's claim in his affidavit.

Wed, 01 Mar 2006 05:36:55 -0800

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs CB Eric Warfield hasn't heard from the Chiefs about his future, so he tries to find the meaning anywhere he can. "I take everything as a sign," Warfield said. Those signs seem to point to the end of his Chiefs career. Warfield has a hefty contract, making him an inviting target for a team with serious salary cap problems. He has not spoken to any of the Chiefs brass since the end of the season. "I'd like to stay, but I really have no sense of what's going to happen," Warfield said. "All I know is that there's a lot of concern for the defense. I don't know where I fit into that. I think I held my own last year, but I know it wasn't my best year. I could have done a lot better."

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs CB Eric Warfield will probably play for the first time this season in the team's Week 7 game, according to head coach Dick Vermeil. Vermeil said Warfield's playing status would not be affected by the availability of starting CB Dexter McCleon (groin), who injured a groin muscle against Washington and left the team's Week 6 game early. Vermeil indicated Warfield's inactivity was in no way punishment for the suspension for a violation of the NFL's substance-abuse policy. He also said it had nothing to do with the way Warfield played during training camp and the preseason.

Chiefs | Vermeil Discusses Warfield

Wed, 03 Aug 2005 19:36:42 -0700

The Kansas City Chiefs official training camp site reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil discussed CB Eric Warfield during his press conference Wednesday, August 3. He said Warfield is doing well even though he has lost his starting role. "He's drilling well, he's practicing well, the reps he's getting, he's doing a good job with. I think that he is doing fine. He understands that he put himself in a situation and that he'll have to battle it out by doing everything right. You provide opportunities for other people to take your job when you make the kind of mistakes that Eric has made but he's a competitor and the best defensive back last year, so there is no reason he can't strive to be the same thing. It just won't be automatic - he's going to have to prove it."

Warfield was suspended by the NFL for the first four games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. "He'll practice just like he would be playing, except he's not going to be in the starting unit," head coach Dick Vermeil said. "He'll get his share. We're going to do everything we can to make sure that if he's going to be our starter after four games, he's prepared to be the starter." That sounds as if it's less than a sure thing Warfield will be handed his starting job back once he returns. Vermeil said the Chiefs plan to bring Warfield back as the starter against Washington.
