General manager Jerry Angelo and head coach Lovie Smith took a look at what's out there that might help a roster that has not been able to achieve any consistency at wide receiver since training camp opened. Watts doesn't appear to be someone the club is still targeting.

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports the Chicago Bears will work out free agent WR Darius Watts (Broncos) Tuesday, Sept. 5, according to a league source. Watts was released over the weekend after falling from the No. 3 position on the Denver Broncos depth chart to not being on it. Watts is believed to have other visits in the works if he does not sign a contract with the Bears. ''Obviously, the Bears are a good situation,'' said Todd France, Watts' agent. ''And Darius is very interested in Chicago. We were OK with what happened in Denver. He needed a fresh start because there were a lot of things there that didn't make sense. I know the Bears have very big interest in Darius.''

The Associated Press reports Denver Broncos WR Darius Watts has been told he's been cut by the team. Watts' departure was a surprise. The Broncos had praised him all offseason for his improved play and he was in position to serve as the third or fourth wide receiver following WR Ashley Lelie's trade to Atlanta. "I didn't see it coming," Watts said. "Tell me if anybody did."

Pat Rooney, writing for the Rocky Mountain News, reports Denver Broncos assistant head coach Mike Heimerdinger has started working with WR Darius Watts the same way he worked with WR Rod Smith in 1995. Watts said, "(Heimerdinger) is just trying to get my hands right, get my hands in better position to catch the ball. Stuff like that. Rod told me he used to do that with him. He said he showed him how to catch the ball right. (Smith) said it really helped him out a lot."

Pat Graham, of the Associated Press, reports Denver Broncos WR Darius Watts dropped another pass in practice Tuesday, Aug. 1. Head coach Mike Shanahan singled Watts out in June as someone who showed a lot more confidence, but was inconsistent with his hands. The inconsistent hands have followed Watts to camp, where he will make one nice catch on a long play and then drop a ball over the middle. On occasion, Shanahan has called Watts aside. Watts stayed after Tuesday's practice and worked on his pass routes.

Watts made some strides in the offseason after spending all of last season in the dog house. "I was kind of glad it happened, you know, it made me focus more," Watts said. The Associated Press reports Denver Broncos WR Darius Watts shined during the team's 16 days of workouts, which included their last minicamp. Head coach Mike Shanahan singled out Watts as the player who made the biggest strides over the offseason. Shanahan said, "I see him feeling a lot more comfortable with the system where he doesn't have to think. He can react. A lot of times when a guy can do that, then catching a ball becomes much easier. He still has great speed, he's very explosive and he can do things a lot of receivers can't do. More importantly for him, I think he feels a lot more comfortable with the scheme so he can go out there and execute and not think. He looked pretty good."

"Oh, yeah, Darius can still do the job," Shanahan said last month at the NFL meetings. Last week, Plummer said Watts has "sick" ability. Watts is happy to hear the words of encouragement as he prepares for his third NFL season. Watts will compete with WRs David Terrell and Charlie Adams for backup roles.

Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan was asked Tuesday, Jan. 24, if WR Darius Watts fit into the team's future and he replied, "Darius was a guy that was inconsistent the year before and was not consistent enough in preseason to give him that opportunity to play. With the numbers two, three and four wide receivers playing well on special teams, he didn't get an opportunity. Now, he still probably has as much ability as any receiver I've been around. This offseason will be crucial for him to get consistent catching the ball and when he does, he'll be a difference-maker, and if he doesn't, then he won't be on the field."

He's now playing behind WR Charlie Adams and WR Todd Devoe, both undrafted free agents. The Broncos want to see how Watts responds and would like to see him battle back into the lineup.
