President Dean Spanos had decided about a month ago that Turner's time was up but only recently convinced himself to do the same with Smith. There will be no last-minute change of plans like before, according to a source close to Spanos' plans. Current director of player personnel Jimmy Raye is the favorite to take over as GM.

The Bears are expected to interview Kansas City Chiefs director of college scouting Phil Emery and New York Giants director of pro scouting Marc Ross at some point. Director of player personnel Tim Ruskell remains a candidate.

Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said he wants to utilize TE Vernon Davis' vertical speed to create problems for defenses. He wants his contributions in the passing game to come as a receiver - not a blocker. "He's also an excellent in-line blocker," Raye said, "but we would like to use him not as much in blocking in pass situations as we would running routes. So we would like to put him in positions where he is a matchup problem for the defense ... provided the protection that we have will allow us to do that."

Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports the New York Jets have hired former Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye according to NFL sources. Raye, 59, has worked for 10 different NFL teams and has served as an offensive coordinator with five of them. It is unclear what position he will serve with the Jets but he has coached all offensive positions during his career.
