He was suspended from the NFL the past three seasons for repeat violations of the league's substance abuse policy.

Jaguars | Seeking Character

Mon, 16 Apr 2001 00:25:01 -0700

The Times-Union's John Oehser reports the Jacksonville Jaguars are not saying who they will select in the NFL Draft, but one thing for sure the player selected likely won't have a questionable work ethic, behavior or background, and he certainly won't be a player the team and its security hasn't examined carefully. Coach Tom Coughlin said the team will pay close attention to those factors after having probelms with last year's No. 1 pick, WR R. Jay Soward. Last season Soward was fined more than $50,000 for violating team rules, suspended for a game in December, then put on the reserve/non-football illness list the final week of the season. He reportedly will be suspended for the first four games of the 2001 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.
