Cardinals | Green sets QB rotation for Saturday |
Wed, 16 Aug 2006 16:04:43 -0700
The Associated Press reports Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green has set his quarterback rotation for the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 19. QB Kurt Warner and the rest of the Cardinals first team will play the first quarter. Rookie QB Matt Leinart will play at least a quarter. "He'll (Leinart) go in the second, and then John Navarre will go in the third," Green said. Leinart has taken extensive reps with the second team since arriving at the training camp, which ends Thursday, Aug. 17, at Northern Arizona University.

Cardinals | Leinart talks set to resume |
Mon, 14 Aug 2006 05:46:09 -0700
Kent Somers, of the Arizona Republic, reports the Arizona Cardinals and the agent for rookie QB Matt Leinart were expected to resume negotiations Sunday, Aug. 13, in the hopes of reaching an agreement early this week. That would allow Leinart to play some minutes in the team's next preseason game Saturday, Aug. 19. The Cardinals showed little interest in negotiating late last week as they prepared for the opening of their new stadium. The Cardinals need to get him into camp quickly because their backup quarterback situation is unsettled. A bad performance last Saturday, Aug. 12, by backup QB John Navarre may have given agent Tom Condon more leverage.

Cardinals | Navarre taking advantage of Leinart's absence |
Thu, 10 Aug 2006 10:00:57 -0700
Kent Somers, of the Arizona Republic, reports Arizona Cardinals QB John Navarre has been benefiting from QB Matt Leinart's holdout, getting more reps in practice than he did the past two seasons. Navarre has been working hard to improve his throwing motion and will provide stiff competition with Leinart to be the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart.

Cardinals | Navarre will battle Leinart for No. 2 spot |
Fri, 07 Jul 2006 18:19:48 -0700
Kent Somers, writing for the Sporting News, reports Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green is genuine when he raves about QB John Navarre, a seventh-round pick in 2004. It's not a given that rookie QB Matt Leinart will back up QB Kurt Warner when the 2006 season gets underway.

Cardinals | Green expects battle for No. 2 QB spot at training camp |
Thu, 15 Jun 2006 19:18:34 -0700
AZCardinals.com reports Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green was complimentary of rookie QB Matt Leinart and expects Leinart and QB John Navarre to have a healthy competition at training camp as they battle for the backup quarterback role. "He's doing well," said Green of the former Heisman Trophy Winner. "I think for a first year player he is further along than most first year quarterbacks would be. He has worked with the two minute offense and he has done a lot of the things we are doing. Part of that is that he comes out of a good pro passing system and part of it is that he was a very talented player when he was in the system, but he is a quick study." "I'm in a good situation playing behind Kurt (Warner) and learning from John," stated Leinart. "John is a smart guy and he has been around here for a few years now so it is a good situation for me. We all obviously want to play so we just have to go out, work hard, compete and be ready when our name is called."

Wed, 14 Jun 2006 08:46:54 -0700
Darren Urban, of the East Valley Tribune, reports Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green said Tuesday, June 13, both QB Matt Leinart and QB John Navarre will continue to share practice time as the No. 2 quarterback headed into training camp. Green emphasized no depth chart would be established with only two voluntary on-field workouts left.

Cardinals | Leinart and Navarre battling for No. 2 QB |
Fri, 09 Jun 2006 21:02:11 -0700
Kent Somers, writing for the Sporting News, reports Arizona Cardinals rookie QB Matt Leinart is splitting second-team reps during offseason work with QB John Navarre behind starting QB Kurt Warner, and Navarre insists he is confident he will have a fair shot to be the backup. Not only will it be a huge upset if Leinart isn't No.2 by the time the season begins, but some think Leinart won't give up the job if and when Warner gets hurt.

Cardinals | Navarre expects to compete with Leinart |
Wed, 03 May 2006 06:52:01 -0700
Darren Urban, of the East Valley Tribune, reports Arizona Cardinals QB John Navarre expects to give rookie QB Matt Leinart a battle for the team's No. 2 quarterback job. Navarre said he understands the Cardinals taking Leinart, who was high on their draft board, but he believes he has an advantage by already working two years in the offensive system, and is not going to give up just because Leinart was a top draft choice. "I was expected to push Kurt (Warner)," Navarre said. "I am going to push Matt; he is going to push me. Competition separates the best. I expect that and he has to expect that coming in. I'm not going to change how I work."

Cardinals | Green calls Leinart selection huge |
Sun, 30 Apr 2006 06:56:45 -0700
Kent Somers, of the Arizona Republic, reports the Arizona Cardinals took all of about two minutes to write QB Matt Leinart's name on their draft card when he was still available at the No. 10 selection in the first round of the NFL Draft. "This is a huge pick," head coach Dennis Green said. "I mean, this is huge." In Leinart, they have a quarterback who could have been the No. 1 overall pick had he entered the draft a year ago instead of pursuing a third college championship. "Coach Green was fired up," Leinart said. "He said it was a gift from heaven. I think it's a great fit. I know they have great, great players on offense and a lot of weapons, similar to what I'm used to at USC." Ideally, Leinart won't play at all in 2006. QB Kurt Warner is the starter, and Leinart will compete with QB John Navarre for the backup's job. But if the Cardinals' start losing, or if Warner struggles, there will be pressure to play Leinart.

Cardinals | Green likes Navarre as his backup; but team could add another QB |
Thu, 16 Feb 2006 06:03:04 -0800
Kent Somers, of the Arizona Republic, reports Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green sounds comfortable entering this season with QB John Navarre as the backup to QB Kurt Warner, but he didn't rule out the possibility of adding a quarterback through the draft or free agency. QB Rohan Davey is currently the No. 3 quarterback, assuming QB Josh McCown departs via free agency as expected. As he has for two years, Green raved about Navarre Wednesday, Feb. 15, comparing him favorably to other former Michigan quarterbacks, such as Brian Griese and Elvis Grbac. "I think getting him in the seventh round (in 2004) was big for us," Green said, "and he has a chance to show what we're doing with him. We'll still be wide open in the draft." The team did say if Texas QB Vince Young fell to them in the first round of the NFL Draft (unlikely to happen), they probably couldn't pass him up.
