Broncos | Van Pelt could be roster casualty, balks at position switch |
Tue, 15 Aug 2006 20:35:13 -0700
Terry Frei, of the Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos QB Bradlee Van Pelt may be a casualty of the numbers gaem when it comes to a roster spot. The Broncos are entertaining the idea of retrieving only two quarterbacks with the recent play of rookie QB Jay Cutler. The team has a need for a punter while P Todd Sauerbraun serves a four-game suspension for violation of the league substance abuse policy. Van Pelt balked at the idea of switching positions and received support from head coach Mike Shanahan on that subject, "I've never really thought about it, to be honest with you. He's been such a competitor, he's worked so hard at the quarterback position."

"A little," said Cutler, who is now Denver's second quarterback. "But that's how it is. There's competition out here and coach is going to play the best guy." Van Pelt, who lost his job this week to Cutler, said he accepted the coaches' decision and moved on. "We're all competing and it's understood," Van Pelt said. "If you can't handle it, you're not going to last long in this business. You can't look at someone you call your friend and envy him or despise him because he's in your position."

Broncos | Van Pelt hoping to land as No. 2; may be No. 3 |
Sun, 30 Jul 2006 09:00:47 -0700
Bill Wilson, of the Daily Times-Call, reports Denver Broncos QB Bradlee Van Pelt will battle rookie QB Jay Cutler for the team's No. 2 quarterback spot in training camp. Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan said he will likely break camp with three quarterbacks this year, a luxury he waived the past three seasons. He has also continued to praise Van Pelt, insisting he's throwing better than ever and dismissing the notion he's the odd man out in the quarterback battle. Even though he's vastly improved according to his coaches, Van Pelt still shows the rough edges obvious to the most casual fans. So far, Van Pelt has found his way thanks to his raw athleticism and harsh competitiveness, attributes that usually aren't enough in the NFL. Since joining the Broncos as a seventh-round pick in the 2004 draft, Van Pelt as made slow but consistent progress in refining his skills to the standards of Shanahan's offensive system. With his window in Denver narrowed, Van Pelt knows he may ultimately be playing for a spot on another NFL team. He admits his immediate reaction to Denver's draft was to think a chance in another camp might be his best option.

Head coach Mike Shanahan said, "I guarantee he won't do it again. I don't think I've been around that since I've been in the NFL --a defensive lineman hitting the quarterback when he jumps offsides -- but it just goes to show you that you have to review everything and you would think that would be common sense but sometimes it's not."

Van Pelt has been number two on the depth chart since the beginning of last season but is proving to be a worthy challenger to starting QB Jake Plummer.

"I'm not anywhere as bulky or as strong as I was in college or my first couple years (with the Broncos) upper body- wise," he said. "I'm still very strong for a quarterback, but I realized that to become a little more flexible like a rubber band and to become a more natural thrower, I had to help my body."

Van Pelt added, "I really haven't faced competition and not overcome it. I'm not saying I'm going to overcome Jay Cutler, but I'm going to go out there swinging, and if I go down, I'm going to go down swinging." Van Pelt's chances of holding off Cutler long-term are very slim since Cutler will likely get more practice time to help him develop faster.

Wed, 03 May 2006 11:01:11 -0700
Andrew Mason, of DenverBroncos.com, reports Denver Broncos QB Bradlee Van Pelt is not worried about his status on the team. The Broncos drafted Oregon QB Jay Cutler with the eleventh pick in the first-round of the draft. "I was a little surprised (with the Cutler pick), but like I said, it's a business," Van Pelt said. "I was telling everyone going into the draft (that) they might draft a quarterback, I don't know. I've got to be prepared for anything. I am prepared for anything and I keep on falling back (on the fact that) I believe in myself. As long as I believe in myself, I have nothing to worry about, and I don't. I can only control what I do. I can't control decisions -- whether I get a fair shake. I believe I'm going to," he said. "I think this organization is respectful and they have a lot of character. I think of myself as someone who has a lot of character; that's why I'm going to welcome (Cutler).

Broncos | Healthy starters will play - but will they play the whole game? |
Tue, 27 Dec 2005 18:28:30 -0800
Frank Schwab, of the Gazette, reports Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan plans to play his healthy starters in the team's Week 17 game, but for how long is the question. Shanahan said Tuesday, Dec. 27, the starters will play against the San Diego Chargers even though Denver has clinched the second seed in the AFC playoffs. QB Jake Plummer will start the game. "I'm not going to say definitely he'll play the whole game but that's the plan going in," Shanahan said. Backup QB Bradlee Van Pelt said he got the same message. "They made it clear to me yesterday and today that it's going to be just like any other week for the offense," Van Pelt said. "Jake's starting and if you get called in, deal with it. As the plan is right now, I'm not going in." Shanahan made similar statements before the Broncos played their regular season finale at Green Bay two years ago but held many key players out because Denver's playoff position was determined.

Mon, 26 Dec 2005 08:22:59 -0800
Jeff Legwold and Lee Rasizer, of the Rocky Mountain News, report Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan will not discuss his plans for a meaningless Week 17 game. The prevailing opinion in the locker room was that the starters who are healthy will play some. "I have no idea, but I think we'll have to play just a little bit," WR Ashley Lelie said. "We have a bye right after that. So that would be three weeks without playing, and that would be kind of iffy. I'm sure he'll get us in there at least a half." One player who almost surely will play against the San Diego Chargers is backup QB Bradlee Van Pelt.
