Jim Thomas, writing for the Sporting News, reports St. Louis Rams QB Ryan Fitzpatrick seems to have the edge so far, but QB Jeff Smoker still has a chance to emerge from training camp as the No. 3 quarterback. Smoker has a stronger arm, but Fitzpatrick is more accurate and is better on the move. Smoker is aided by the fact that his former position coach at Michigan State, Doug Nussmeier, is now the Rams' quarterbacks coach. However, Rams' head coach Scott Linehan liked Fitzpatrick coming out of college.

Jim Thomas, writing for the Sporting News, reports St. Louis Rams QBs Jeff Smoker and Ryan Fitzpatrick struggled during the team's minicamp. Fitzpatrick was off on several of his deep passes, but made some nice throws on the move. Smoker's accuracy was erratic throughout the weekend. The two quarterbacks are competing for the No. 3 quarterback job.

Nick Wagoner, of StLouisRams.com, reports St. Louis Rams QB Gus Frerotte has made himself readily available to QBs Marc Bulger, Jeff Smoker and Ryan Fitzpatrick to answer any questions about head coach Scott Linehan's offensive ideas. He has also helped other offensive players with learning Linehan's offense. Linehan said, "I'm sure he feels like he is one of the assistant coaches out there. He knows what I am going to want. He knows what I am going to watch, he knows what I am going to say about something. He is wearing another hat, but his role is to be our backup quarterback. He started nearly 80 or 90 games in the NFL now, so we know what he can do, and that if something ever happens to Marc (Bulger) he could step in."

Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports the battle for the St. Louis Rams No. 3 quarterback spot is warming up between QBs Jeff Smoker and rookie Ryan Fitzpatrick. Smoker had been doing more watching than throwing because the team wanted to get a good look at Fitzpatrick. Until this week, that is, when Smoker's work in practice increased dramatically. After getting in for just two series late in the fourth quarter last week, Smoker could be line for a lengthier stint against the San Diego Chargers Sunday, Aug. 21.

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick retains information well enough that he could know as much about the Rams' offense by midseason as Smoker does in a year and a half.

Steve Korte, of the News Democrat, reports St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz was pleased with the effort of backup QB Jeff Smoker at this weekend's minicamp. Smoker is competing to be the team's No. 2 quarterback. "We are going to give him a lot of opportunities," Martz said. "This is the right time for him. This is his third year, and he should be ready to step up and be counted on." Martz said Smoker looked sharp throwing the ball on both Saturday, June 4 and Sunday, June 5.

R.B. Fallstrom, of the Associated Press, reports St. Louis Rams QB Jeff Smoker has switched his uniform number from No. 9 to No. 15 at the recommendation of head coach Mike Martz. Every time Martz looked at Smoker he saw the ghost of QB Joe Germaine, who was supposed to be the backup before getting cut in 2001. Martz said he also recalled couple of college quarterbacks who wore that number being failures, too. Martz had been trying since last year to get Smoker to change his number. "I kind of just kept putting it off, and I kind of showed up this morning and that number was in my locker," Smoker said. "So, I guess I'll be 15."

"I'm going to give it a shot," Smoker said. "I feel like I learned a lot this year. I'm going to keep trying to improve my skills in the offseason. I'm going to work hard at it, because I don't really like to sit on the bench. This is the first time I had to do it, and I don't really enjoy it. So I'm going to work hard at getting that No. 2 spot if I can." Smoker served as the team's third-string quarterback and did not appear in a regular season game in 2004.
