Chargers | Philip Rivers to sit out Friday

Fri, 19 Aug 2016 17:10:48 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers will not play in the preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals Friday, Aug. 19.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers will play in the third preseason game and should receive solid playing time during that game. Rivers should be a solid No. 1 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.

Chargers | Two Chargers close to history

Thu, 11 Aug 2016 14:11:35 -0700

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers and TE Antonio Gates are nine touchdowns away from surpassing San Francisco 49ers QB Steve Young and WR Jerry Rice for touchdown connections. They would then only trail former Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning and WR Marvin Harrison for most touchdowns between a quarterback and pass-catcher in a career.

Fantasy Tip: You can bet Rivers and Gates know what's at stake this season, and one would think they will try to pass the legendary 49er duo this season. The tight end's best seasons are probably behind him, but he still has gas left in the tank. Draft Gates as a borderline TE1 and Rivers as a mid- to low-end QB1.

Chargers | Tyrell Williams synced with Philip Rivers

Mon, 08 Aug 2016 10:57:18 -0700

San Diego Chargers WR Tyrell Williams has found a groove with Chargers QB Philip Rivers in training camp. The duo connected on consecutive touchdowns Monday, Aug. 8, after Rivers shared an adjustment with the second-year receiver. Williams displayed a competitive streak, as well.

Fantasy Tip: San Diego really could use another player to step up after the retirement of Malcom Floyd and the loss of Stevie Johnson via injury. Williams could emerge as a deep sleeper in large fantasy formats.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon more confident in Year 2

Sun, 31 Jul 2016 15:18:37 -0700

Chargers | Melvin Gordon more confident in Year 2 San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon is more confident and comfortable than he was as a rookie in 2015, not only in his own words but also in the eyes of QB Philip Rivers. "I just felt a more confident guy, a guy that felt a little more comfortable. I think that's key for a running back. You've got to be hungry and do all those things, but if you're antsy as a runner, you don't see things right," Rivers said. "I feel comfortable with the playbook. I feel more comfortable with myself. ... (Last year) was a long season. It was a grind. Mentally and physically, I think it was important (to get away). I needed the offseason to really get at it," Gordon said.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon was one of many running backs to disappoint last year, but owners need to remember San Diego used 24 unique offensive line combinations last season and fielded a pretty poor defense, which meant a lot of Danny Woodhead. His current seventh-round ADP is much more palatable and makes him a potential value pick this season if the Chargers can enjoy just a bit more luck on the injury front this season.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon draws rave reviews

Sat, 30 Jul 2016 20:14:22 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon seems like a "more confident guy" this year, QB Philip Rivers said after practice Saturday, July 30, and head coach Mike McCoy said he is "very pleased" with where Gordon's conditioning is at.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon was a big disappointment as a rookie, but the Chargers aren't going to give up on the first-round pick yet. He is still worth taking a chance on as a RB3.

Chargers | San Diego unlikely to take QB early

Thu, 03 Mar 2016 17:17:54 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers can still lead the team to wins moving forward, and the Chargers should not consider selecting a quarterback with the third overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, in the opinion of NFL Network's Brian Baldinger.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers has thrown at least 25 touchdowns in each of his last eight seasons and should continue to be the team's starting quarterback for a few more seasons. Rivers probably will be a low-end No. 1 quarterback in most leagues next season.

Chargers | Philip Rivers considered retirement

Tue, 26 Jan 2016 17:03:57 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers considered retirement after the 2014 season when he dealt with rib and back injuries. He eventually signed a four-year contract extension last August, and Rivers now says he feels far better this offseason than last.

"This year, physically, I'm great. Emotionally, it's been rough, but I'm excited -- I really am excited about who the new core is going to be. I'm excited to be part of that group. I'm waiting for it, kind of letting them take it. ... It's not going to be the buddies I came with; they're going to be gone," Rivers said.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers started the year out really hot but proceeded to fade in the second half, mainly because the Chargers receiving corps was decimated by injuries. He managed a career-best 4,792 yards and 29 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. A lack of a ground game led to a staggering 661 attempts in 2015. If the run game improves next year and his offensive line can protect, Rivers can remain a potent QB1 even at age 34.

Chargers | Philip Rivers threw the most in 2015

Tue, 05 Jan 2016 17:13:39 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers led the league with 661 pass attempts this season -- the most since Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford threw an all-time record 727 times in 2012. His 661 attempts were also the sixth most all time in one season.

Fantasy Tip: The Chargers were behind on the scoreboard early and often this season, so Rivers really had no choice but to throw a lot to try to keep San Diego in games. He has thrown for at least 4,000 yards in seven of his last eight seasons and remains in the QB1 conversation heading into next season.

Chargers | Philip Rivers shows toughness

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 22:15:47 -0800

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers completed 21 of his 35 pass attempts for 228 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the Week 17 game against the Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Tip: Rivers was playing behind a decimated offensive line for most of the season, and with a cadre of receivers that even he had a tough time remembering their name. Still, he gritted through it and posted better than average results. He showed he can still be a solid fantasy option, and it would really be nice to see him with a healthy offensive line and NFL-caliber receivers again.
