Mon, 16 Apr 2001 00:10:01 -0700
The Boston Herald reports although the New England Patriots are in need of a tight end, chances are the NFL Draft will not be the place they find their answer. It's been 10 years since the Patriots took their last TE that had any impact, a guy named Ben Coates. The Patriots have pursued several veteran free agents this off-season, including Byron Chamberlain, O.J. Santiago, Luther Broughton, Johnny McWilliams and Pete Mitchell. The last three remain free agents and several vets could join them in the free agent pool after June 1. The team would like to add a veteran to team with TE Jermaine Wiggins. The team would like TE Rod Rutledge to step up, but with a $586,000 cap figure there are no guarantees he'll make it through training camp. The Patriots may look for a TE in the later rounds of the draft.

WR Terry Glenn will report to Foxborough for passing and mini-camps, but he will do most of his off-season workouts at home in Columbus, Ohio.

The New York Post reports as the NFL Draft gets closer the New York Giants need for a TE remains a constant. The Giants could select a TE with one of their first three selections in the draft. TE Dan Campbell is expected to be limited this off-season following surgeries on both his shoulders. He is expected to be able to start bench pressing in May or June and the Giants feel he'll be ready for the start of training camp in July. His status thins out an already thin position. Free agent Pete Mitchell may not be back and Howard Cross has not decided on his return. Last year's practice squad player, TE Adam Young will be given a shot to make the final roster this year.

The team also had discussions with the representatives for Washington restricted free agent RB Skip Hicks, but the talks never reached the offer stage. His compensation is a third round pick which may be too high for the Patriots to consider. Priest Holmes remains on the market, but after an early call to his agent there has been very little contact. Agent Ralph Cindrich, who represents TE Pete Mitchell, said he and the Patriots "will be talking" during the next few days following Mitchell's visit on Friday.

The NY Times reports the four-year contract signed by coach Jim Fassel with the New York Giants on Tuesday is worth $10.75 million and makes him one of the highest-paid coaches in the NFL. Fassel's annual salary of nearly $2.7 million more than doubles the pay from his old contract. With Fassel's deal complete the Giants will turn their attention to re-signing their free agents. CB Jason Sehorn and RB Tiki Barber remain their priority. Other Giants free agents are DT Christian Peter; TE Pete Mitchell; LBs Ryan Phillips and Pete Monty; No. 3 QB Mike Cherry; PK Brad Daluiso; and P Brad Maynard. GM Ernie Accorsi wouldn't comment yesterday on questions about Chmura, but he never discusses free agents. A person close to the situation said the Giants plan to "explore the situation and do some background work" on Chmura in the same manner they did with QB Kerry Collins last season. Another key into any potential signing of Chmura is the status of their own TE Pete Mitchell. He has indicated to teammates he'll be looking to move on to a team that will better utilize his receiving ability.
Tue, 30 Jan 2001 23:40:26 -0800
The Associated Press reports as the New York Giants look towards the 2001 season, their first thoughts will turn to free agency. As reported the two significant free agents they would like to re-sign are RB Tiki Barber and CB Jason Sehorn. Among their other free agents, PK Brad Daluiso, TE Pete Mitchell and QB Mike Cherry almost certainly will not be back. DT Christian Peter, LB Ryan Phillips and P Brad Maynard might return, but the team probably will not spend lavishly to keep them. GM Ernie Accorsi and capologist Kevin Abrams will look to restructure some salaries with DE Michael Strahan and QB Kerry Collins as potential targets. The team's needs are a young CB, a pass-rushing DE, a #3 QB, TE, PK and depth along both lines. The overall priority, coach Jim Fassel said, is continuing to add team speed and athleticism, ala the Ravens.
Mon, 29 Jan 2001 07:21:39 -0800
According to the Boston Herald, New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft said on Friday he expects the team to be limited in their free agent activity. They may pursue solid second-tier players versus top of the line free agents. Two of the free agents from the Super Bowl, RB Priest Holmes and TE Pete Mitchell could be affordable and of the most interest to the Patriots.

Newsday reports that after going through two days of mini-camp so far, the Giants are optimistic about the upcoming season, but that optimism is guarded. The team is pleased with the two QBs they have, Kent Graham and Kerry Collins, they have a crowded but talented backfield, veteran leadership is back with Brian Williams and Jason Sehorn and they really like the presence of Pete Mitchell at TE. DE Michael Strahan, an outspoken team leader, went on to say "talent isn't the problem. The problem seems to be a little bit of commitment sometimes." He has been concerned about spotty attendance of some players - on both offense and defense - in the voluntary offseason conditioning program.
Thu, 11 Mar 1999 21:55:00 -0800
The Bergen Record reports that TE Pete Mitchell (JAX) apparently has moved to the top of the Giants Free Agent list at TE. He is reportedly more cap-friendly than the other TEs the team looked at, Jamie Asher (WAS) and David Sloan (DET). They also feel he is less of an injury risk and he can also be a long snapper if needed.
Wed, 10 Mar 1999 22:15:00 -0800
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that after meeting with Steelers officials, Free Agent TE Pete Mitchell believes he can help the Steelers and there is room for him and Mark Bruener to co-exist in the Steelers offense. Mitchell is known more for his pass catching skills while he called Bruener the "premier blocking tight end in the league." The Steelers don't have enough cap money to sign Mitchell and OL Wayne Gandy but they want to keep Mitchell as an option in case they can't get Gandy signed.
