Steve Wyche, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports former Atlanta Falcons OT Bob Whitfield, now with the New York Giants, is still upset in the manner in which he was released from the team in 2003. In an expletive-laced interview with the New York Daily News, Whitfield said he would like to be in a room with Falcons president and general manager Rich McKay so he could "really tell him how I think of his [stuff]. That is what you need to write." Whitfield added, "I don't talk to punks. I'm not disgruntled. He has to do his job. I've got to do mine. Just from a man-to-man perspective, he could have told me, dog." Whitfield claims McKay led him to believe he'd be part of the team in 2004, but Whitfield heard through the media that his job security was uncertain. He was then but before the regular season started, which helped lead to his grudge.

Mike Garafolo, of the Newark Star-Ledger, reports New York Giants starting OG David Diehl and OT Luke Petitgout could be in danger of losing their starting jobs after their performances Sunday, Nov. 27. Petitgout committed five false starts penalties and Diehl committed three false start penalties and one holding penalty. "I would like to keep the unit together, but I do know that I have some veterans that can play," head coach Tom Coughlin said. "And If I don't see improvement in that, I don't have a lot of choice." The backups Coughlin referred to are OT Bob Whitfield and OG Jason Whittle.

"I welcome the competition," Whitfield said. "I'm an old-school guy. Luke is the starter. I can't just come in and say I'm replacing the starter. I'm just coming in to support. And then if there's an opportunity to replace the starter, you have to earn that job. It's definitely not given to you."

"Bob is definitely out for the year," head coach Dan Reeves said. "That's a big loss." OT Kevin Shaffer replaced Whitfield in Sunday's, Nov. 2, game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Whether he stays there in uncertain.

As an update to previous reports, Len Pasquarelli for ESPN.com reports while details of the restructured contract agreed to by Atlanta Falcons OT Bob Whitfield were not immediately available, his agent, Ken Landpher confirmed the move provides the team with about $1 million - $1.2 million in additional cap room. It is believed his base salary was reduced to the $750,000 minimum, with the extra $1.55 million being converted into a guaranteed signing bonus. If this is true, his cap number would be reduced from $4.183 million to $2.943 million.

The Falcons, who have never used the franchise designation, are telling anyone who will listen they plan to slap it on Buchanan to keep him from departing. AtlantaFalcons.com reports head coach Dan Reeves stated he thought rookie QB Doug Johnson did some good things on Sunday but felt veteran Chris Chandler gave them a spark coming off the bench. He'll hold off until later this week before naming his starter for this weekend's game. Reeves plans to sit down at the end of the year and determine whether or not Chandler is going to stay with the team or not. In other news, Reeves stated he'd like to have new deals with OL Bob Whitfield and CB Ray Buchanan, both eligible for free agency at the end of the year, signed before Christmas.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the Atlanta Falcons have increased their level of talks with Ray Anderson, the agent for upcoming free agent OL Bob Whitfield. Whitfield is believed to be looking for a 5 to 7 year deal in the range of $35 to $56 million; with a signing bonus in the range of $6-$10 million. The team hasn't had much contact with other potential free agents. CB Ray Buchanan is one of their other high-profile players and he said he may have to depart if the money is right.
