"No need for that," one Falcons player said. "It came on our watch, but it didn't have to come that way. We won't forget it." Saints head coach Sean Payton defended the decision to go for the record. "Someone is going to ask this question, so I am going to answer it before it's asked," Payton said during his postgame media session. "Typically, would I be throwing it there? The answer would be probably not. In fact, the answer would be 'I wouldn't be.' But I thought it was appropriate that we get the record. And we did it. We have a ton of respect for (Falcons coach) Mike (Smith), his staff and his players. It seemed like the right thing to do. I felt real good about the decision."

"I had an X-ray (Wednesday) and it looked good," Payton said. "I'm kind of a little bit ahead of schedule. We looked at the fracture area and the screws and the plate that are in it. I didn't realize there were seven screws in there. I'll be setting off some alarms at the airport for the rest of my life. Overall, it's doing well."

A lot of it depends on how quickly he recovers from leg surgery. He felt he had some advantages from his higher vantage point; as he was able to watch the game similar to how he breaks down tape from an overhead camera. Payton will likely resume play calling in Week 8 against the St. Louis Rams, but he has not yet revealed if he or offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael will handle that duty versus St. Louis.

Mon, 17 Oct 2011 10:44:24 -0700 Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton (knee, leg) underwent surgery Monday, Oct. 17, to repair a torn meniscus and fractured tibia. Payton will be rehabbing the injuries for three to six months and will be able to put partial weight on the leg in about eight weeks. He is expected to go to the team's facility Wednesday, Oct. 19, or Thursday, Oct. 20.
