John Murphy, for WIVB.com, reports the Buffalo Bills had a list of viable candidates and a list of reach candidates when they conducted their head coaching search, according to sources. Chan Gailey, who was named the Bills head coach, was on top of the viable candidates list. Among the other names on the viable candidates list were Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, Arizona Cardinals assistant head coach Russ Grimm, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera. Former NFL head coaches Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden as well as Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh were on the list of reach candidates.

Other finalists include DE Fred Dean, DE Richard Dent, RB Marshall Goldberg, LB Randy Gradishar, OG Russ Grimm, P Ray Guy, OG Bob Kuechenberg, OG Randall McDaniel, WR Art Monk, WR Andre Reed, commissioner Paul Tagliabue, LB Derrick Thomas, CB Emmitt Thomas, LB Andre Tippett and OT Gary Zimmerman. The Board of Selectors will meet Saturday, Feb. 2, to elect the Hall of Fame Class of 2008.

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is not worried about comments made by OG Alan Faneca, who wanted the team to hire former offensive line coach Russ Grimm instead of Tomlin as head coach Bill Cowher's replacement. "Transition's never easy, particularly at a place like this that has had great stability," Tomlin said. "Some organizations get quite used to change; this is not one of them, thankfully. So you don't expect it to be easy or comfortable for everyone, but not concerned about that at all."

The Pioneer Press reports Pittsburgh Steelers OG Alan Faneca hoped the team would hire former offensive line coach Russ Grimm after head coach Bill Cowher retired. The team decided to hire Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin and allowed Grimm to leave for the Arizona Cardinals, where he is an assistant head coach. "I wanted Russ to get the job," Faneca said. "It's a guy we know, and a guy I'm experienced with. I hoped Russ would get that opportunity, but it didn't work out. When Cowher retired, everybody in the league wanted two of our guys, so you'd think we would want at least one of them."

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers team president Art Rooney II said Tuesday, Jan. 23, the team never finalized a deal with former assistant head coach and offensive line coach Russ Grimm to become the team's head coach, contrary to published reports, although both sides did discuss an offer. "Let me put it this way: We made Russ a finalist, and I think at that point we felt he was somebody we seriously were considering for the job," Rooney said. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for Russ and I do hope he gets a shot to be a head coach; I think he deserves it. I think it is fair to say he came close."

The Detroit Free Press reports the Detroit Lions pursuit of Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach Russ Grimm as head coach will have to wait since the Steelers advanced in the playoffs. Grimm is reportedly at or near the top of the Lions' list. It is not clear if the Lions will wait or move in a different direction. "I'll just wait and see what their decision's going to be," Grimm said. Grimm said he interviewed with the Lions Thursday night, Jan. 12, in a Pittsburgh hotel conference room. He said the meeting lasted five hours, breaking up about midnight.

Tom Kowalski, of mlive.com, reports Detroit Lions president Matt Millen is expected to take the weekend and decide which candidates for the team's head coaching vacancy he'll bring back for a second round of interviews early next week. Millen has talked to nine candidates and he's likely narrow that down to two or three, and many analysts speculate that Pittsburgh Steelers assistant coach Russ Grimm and former New Orleans Saints head coach Jim Haslett are at the top of that list.
