Cardinals | Grimm does not think coaches have advantage

Mike Sando, of ESPN.com, reports Arizona Cardinals assistant head coach/offensive line coach Russ Grimm said he does not think the Cardinals have an advantage over the Pittsburgh Steelers because he and head coach Ken Whisenhunt used to coach for the Steelers. He said they have been away from the Steelers too long to have an advantage during the game.

Former NFL WR Cris Carter and former Washington Redskins CB Darrell Green have been named finalists to be considered for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Other finalists include DE Fred Dean, DE Richard Dent, RB Marshall Goldberg, LB Randy Gradishar, OG Russ Grimm, P Ray Guy, OG Bob Kuechenberg, OG Randall McDaniel, WR Art Monk, WR Andre Reed, commissioner Paul Tagliabue, LB Derrick Thomas, CB Emmitt Thomas, LB Andre Tippett and OT Gary Zimmerman. The Board of Selectors will meet Saturday, Feb. 2, to elect the Hall of Fame Class of 2008.

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is not worried about comments made by OG Alan Faneca, who wanted the team to hire former offensive line coach Russ Grimm instead of Tomlin as head coach Bill Cowher's replacement. "Transition's never easy, particularly at a place like this that has had great stability," Tomlin said. "Some organizations get quite used to change; this is not one of them, thankfully. So you don't expect it to be easy or comfortable for everyone, but not concerned about that at all."

The Pioneer Press reports Pittsburgh Steelers OG Alan Faneca hoped the team would hire former offensive line coach Russ Grimm after head coach Bill Cowher retired. The team decided to hire Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin and allowed Grimm to leave for the Arizona Cardinals, where he is an assistant head coach. "I wanted Russ to get the job," Faneca said. "It's a guy we know, and a guy I'm experienced with. I hoped Russ would get that opportunity, but it didn't work out. When Cowher retired, everybody in the league wanted two of our guys, so you'd think we would want at least one of them."

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers team president Art Rooney II said Tuesday, Jan. 23, the team never finalized a deal with former assistant head coach and offensive line coach Russ Grimm to become the team's head coach, contrary to published reports, although both sides did discuss an offer. "Let me put it this way: We made Russ a finalist, and I think at that point we felt he was somebody we seriously were considering for the job," Rooney said. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for Russ and I do hope he gets a shot to be a head coach; I think he deserves it. I think it is fair to say he came close."
