He didn't indicate exactly when he would join the team, but he was optimistic that he would be able to participate in minicamps. Udeze acknowledged that he still has more work ahead of him after battling leukemia, but he is focused on playing in 2009.

Judd Zulgad, of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings DL Kenechi Udeze (illness) plans to play for the team in 2009. He was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in February and will undergo a bone marrow transplant in the coming days. Udeze was entering the final year of his original five-year contract and under league rules he will have his contract tolled for the 2008 season, meaning his contract will not run at all in 2008 and the final year of his deal will be 2009.

Chip Scoggins, of the Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings DE Kenechi Udeze (illness) told KFAN's Dan Barreiro that he will undergo a bone marrow transplant early next month. Udeze has been diagnosed with an acute form of leukemia. He will undergo the procedure with his older brother, Thomas Barnes, who is a 100 percent match. Udeze said post-transplant recovery time ranges from two to six weeks.

Udeze was placed on the injury list so he can focus on recovering from an acute form of leukemia. Although not required, the Vikings said they will continue to pay Udeze, who is scheduled to make $807,500 this season.

Bob Sansevere, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings DE Kenechi Udeze (illness) learned Wednesday, April 16, his leukemia is in remission. There were no traces of it in his blood or in his bone marrow. He will continue chemotherapy treatments twice a week, hoping the leukemia will stay in remission while he prepares for a bone marrow transplant. Dr. Daniel Weisdorf said the transplant will likely be done within the next few months.

The Star Tribune reports Minnesota Vikings DL Kenechi Udeze has been diagnosed with leukemia, local television stations reported Monday, Feb. 11. The team did not specifically address Udeze's condition, but head coach Brad Childress released a statement through a team spokesman, which read: "With reports surfacing about Kenechi Udeze's condition, we respect the privacy of Kenechi. The thoughts and prayers of the entire Minnesota Vikings organization are with Kenechi and his family."

James will rehab the injury for about two weeks and then will undergo season-ending surgery on his knee. Head coach Brad Childress has not made it clear as to how James will be replaced. Rookie DL Ray Edwards may start at James' position of right end or the team could move DL Kenechi Udeze from left end to right end and start DL Darrion Scott at left end.

Mark Craig, of the Star-Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings DL Kenechi Udeze looks slimmer and faster in training camp. Udeze said, "That's because I am. I lost 25 pounds. I'm 270 and I feel great. I figured in the Tampa-2, and coming off knee surgery, I didn't need to be carrying that extra weight." The lighter weight will help Udeze play without a brace on his knee after having microfracture surgery in October. He missed all but three seasons last year because of the injury.

Kevin Seifert, writing for the Sporting News, reports Minnesota Vikings DE Kenechi Udeze (knee) is working his way back from a knee injury that cut short his 2005 season. Udeze had microfracture surgery performed on his knee, an advanced procedure that doesn't always allow football players to get all the way back to 100 percent. This winter, however, Udeze has begun running agility drills at the team's practice facility. Udeze will have to beat out DE Darrion Scott or DE Erasmus James to regain his starting spot in 2006.

Trainer Chuck Barta wouldn't predict a return date for Udeze saying it depends on what doctors find. "He's still having some ongoing symptoms in there," Barta said. "He's progressively getting more and more fluid in the knee, so they're going to go in there and take a look at the meniscus (cartilage) and take a look at that chondral fracture."
