Updating a previous report, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to make a new ruling in the bounty case involving New Orleans Saints DE Will Smith and LB Jonathan Vilma, Cleveland Browns LB Scott Fujita and free-agent DT Anthony Hargrove (Packers) in the next few weeks. The four players will be eligible to play Week 1 since the ruling will not come this weekend.

A three-member appeals panel have ruled that the suspensions to New Orleans Saints LB Jonathan Vilma and DE Will Smith, Cleveland Browns LB Scott Fujita and free-agent DE Anthony Hargrove (Packers) should be overturned. The four could still face discipline if there is evidence of intent to injure bounties in the case.
Fantasy Tip: This is a surprising development, although it's obviously not over yet. Playmakers Vilma and Smith could prove to be worth IDP roster spots, at least in deep leagues. Vilma would likely begin the season on the PUP list, however; the health of his surgically repaired left knee is in doubt. This would mostly be a positive for the Saints' team defense in non-IDP formats: The reinstatement of some important pieces, assuming that they're in shape, would be beneficial. If the league provides its evidence and still suspends the players, perhaps their suspensions will be for fewer games this time.

Free-agent DL Anthony Hargrove (Packers) has been hit hard by his looming suspension for his part in the alleged bounty scandal during his time with the New Orleans Saints. "Following my release from the Packers on August 24, 2012, my agent informed me that the NFL teams that he spoke with indicated that they would not consider signing me until my suspension is completed," Hargrove said. The NFLPA filed a motion in U.S. District Court in New Orleans Tuesday, Sept. 4, seeking a temporary restraining order to stop the suspensions.
