All I can say to Ricky Williams - I want him to know this - if he hits one of our DBs in the back on a crack block, then I'm coming on the field," Cunningham said. "I mean, he's had a couple of knockouts, but they've been nonlegal. I'll just put it as that." Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano was told about Cunningham's comments and was asked whether he has gotten complaints from other teams about Williams making crackback blocks. "No ... I don't know what you're talking about," Sparano said. Lions coaches have told their defensive backs to watch for crackback blocks.

Cunningham said, "I need to get closer to those players. I'm taking over the middle linebacker and the communication with him. I'm going to come to the sideline, call the game from there so I can be down with them."

Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham said late last season, "They keep wanting to dump players. I would like to be there to catch a lot of them, because I know a couple of those guys." The Chiefs may look to dump some players because they don't fit the new defensive system the team introduced.

"Dale Carter was kind of wiry, long and looked like he was out of control sometimes, and then he'd have the ball," Cunningham said. "When I look at Delmas now, I go, 'My God, it is like I got younger and there is Dale in front of me again.' ... We don't want to anoint the guy at all. But he came on the practice field like I believe you should come on the practice field."
