Lions | Not going with backups

Tue, 11 Dec 2012 00:22:09 -0800

Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham said he doesn't plan to play any young backups in the final three weeks to get them ready for potential roles next year. "I'd like all those guys to play, but it's about winning," Cunningham said. "It doesn't matter what your record is, you have to go out there every game. It's called professional football for a reason. I've never done that, I don't like doing it." Fri, 24 Dec 2010 07:24:09 -0800

Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham said he will come on the field and confront Miami Dolphins RB Ricky Williams should he throw an illegal crackback block in Week 16, according to Carlos Monarrez and Dave Birkett, of the Detroit Free Press. All I can say to Ricky Williams - I want him to know this - if he hits one of our DBs in the back on a crack block, then I'm coming on the field," Cunningham said. "I mean, he's had a couple of knockouts, but they've been nonlegal. I'll just put it as that." Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano was told about Cunningham's comments and was asked whether he has gotten complaints from other teams about Williams making crackback blocks. "No ... I don't know what you're talking about," Sparano said. Lions coaches have told their defensive backs to watch for crackback blocks.

Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports the Detroit Lions might look to pick some players the Kansas City Chiefs release this offseason.
