He played two games at the end of his rookie season but missed all of last season after tearing a ligament in his left knee during an offseason workout. The San Francisco 49ers released him Aug. 11.

He never returned to practice after pulling a hamstring on the first day of training camp. "I didn't really get the opportunity to know him all that well," head coach Mike Nolan said. "He just showed flashes. It's unfortunate. Anytime your first-day picks aren't on the squad, that's a disappointment."

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan knew nothing about WR Derrick Hamilton (knee) playing basketball one day after the team's offseason practice program concluded. Hamilton was recovering from a torn left ACL suffered May 25, 2005, and had not been cleared to take part in 100-on-11 drills. A team spokesman said, "Usually if a guy is not cleared, they have a policy to keep them from doing things like a basketball game." Nolan said he would make sure in the future the club's policy is communicated properly. Hamilton's agent said, "The whole process in some ways could end up being good for Derrick. It all shows that you can't take anything for granted, and you have to focus on what you got to do. From every report I've gotten from the 49ers, Derrick has done everything they expect from him. Now, he just has to get on the field and prove himself."

Matthew Barrows, of the Sacramento Bee, reports San Francisco 49ers WR Derrick Hamilton (knee) recently participated in the team's charity basketball game against the Oakland Raiders. He sat out all three weeks of the 49ers' recent organized team activities because of a lingering knee injury, but he seemed to have no problem staggering opponents with crossover dribbles. He even had an impressive dunk late in the second half. Before tearing an anterior cruciate knee ligament 13 months ago, Hamilton was the No. 3 receiver on the depth chart. During training camp this year, he'll be fighting for a roster spot.

Hamilton tore a ligament in his left knee last May, and then suffered a setback this winter. Nolan said Hamilton needs to be practicing to have a chance to make the team. Hamilton did not practice at the team's offseason workouts. "It sure didn't help him not to be practicing," Nolan said. "If he wants to get on the roster, he needs to play."

Team doctors expect him to be ready for minicamp and organized team activities in June. The team has some hope Hamilton can compete for the team's No. 3 wide receiver spot in 2006. Durability and lack of experience remain the key concerns with Hamilton.

Smith has shown steady progress during the team's first minicamp this year and he admits that he is feeling more comfortable on the practice field each day. "It's coming along quick. It felt good to get out there," Smith said. "I felt a lot better today. It's getting closer to the point where I can just get out and play rather than thinking so much. (But) I'm a long way off from even doing that." Smith ended a two-minute drill with a touchdown pass to WR Derrick Hamilton Sunday, May 8. "If you asked me if I could do that two days ago, I probably would've laughed," said Smith.
