Impending free-agent RB Cedric Benson (Packers) paid fines for a trio of traffic citations in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. Benson goes to court on that citation Wednesday, Feb. 20.
Wed, 23 Jan 2013 07:24:03 -0800
Green Bay Packers impending free-agent RB Cedric Benson could very well return as the team's starting running back in 2013. "I think there's a chance for that," Benson said. "At least I sure hope there is. I've been around a long time, and I know it's a strange league. But I really hope I get another chance here."
Fantasy Tip: Benson had his moments as the team's starting running back before going down to injury, but he averaged just 3.5 yards per carry. The fact Benson is even mentioned as a possible starting option in 2013 perhaps says more about the Packers' lack of quality depth at running back. James Starks can't stay healthy, Alex Green averaged just 3.4 yards per carry this season and DuJuan Harris is better suited in a reserve role. Owners should monitor this situation throughout the offseason, as the Packers may also look to select a back in April's NFL Draft.

Fri, 18 Jan 2013 10:17:55 -0800
The Green Bay Packers feel the need to find a lead back heading into the 2013 season, and that man may not be on the current roster. The Packers shuffled through as many as six running backs this season and weren't satisfied with any of their options. Among the unrestricted free agents they could target this offseason include St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson, Miami Dolphins RB Reggie Bush, Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones and New York Jets RB Shonn Greene. Green Bay would likely be interested in Jackson in the secondary market because he'll be 30 this year.
The Packers had some success using RBs DuJuan Harris, Alex Green and James Starks, but only enough to occasionally draw an opponent's safety into the box. "If you're running the ball and they're closing the middle of the field and bringing an extra guy down, it obviously plays to our strengths as a pass group," running backs coach Alex Van Pelt said. "There were times when I thought we forced their hand and they had to stop it, but we'd obviously like to be more consistent and more productive from start to finish." Harris has plenty of potential, but his lack of size led him to wear down at the end. Green Bay is unlikely to take another chance with RB Cedric Benson and the team might not be willing to pay Starks $1.323 million given his injury history.

"I'm kind of looking and thinking the Bears game," Benson said. "I think we're still a little bit out from practicing, from putting on a cleat and pounding on it like that. I think we're still a couple of weeks away from that, but very close, very close. Kind of the way the doctor puts it to me all the time is regardless of anything, whether you could play tomorrow, you've still got three weeks where you can't play."
Fri, 16 Nov 2012 19:32:35 -0800
Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson (foot) is not running yet, and he is staying cautious for now. Benson is using a "high-tech" treadmill, and on the device, his injured foot doesn't need to absorb his full body weight. He can adjust the percentage. Right now, he is at 65 percent body weight on that treadmill. Benson would not put a specific timetable on his return, but said "absolutely" he wants to play again this season.
Thu, 15 Nov 2012 18:55:00 -0800
Green Bay Packers running backs coach Alex Van Pelt indicated RB James Starks likely will start at running back until RB Cedric Benson (foot) returns. "I think he was productive when he was in there the last couple of games with limited touches, and he has the most experience of the backs we have right now. I think he's earned the right to get in there and get some more touches," Van Pelt said.

Mon, 08 Oct 2012 13:29:37 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson (foot) has been ruled out of the team's Week 6 game, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.
Fantasy Tip: With Benson out, expect Alex Green to get the bulk of the workload for the Packers. James Starks has been a healthy scratch the last two weeks, but he could figure into the picture eventually. Green should be your first target if you're scrounging for RBs.

Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson (foot) said following Week 5 that he does not believe he suffered a Lisfranc injury, only a mild sprain. Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson carried nine times for just 18 yards in his team debut in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers. He did not have any receptions out of the backfield, and he wasn't even targeted once.
Fantasy Tip: Benson should probably get a pass, as the 49ers rush defense is one of the best, if not the best, in the NFL. He should do a little better for his fantasy owners in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears, his former team, in Thursday's game. The Bears allowed just 63 net rushing yards in Week 1, but they did give up a rushing score. Still, consider him more as a RB2 or 'flex' player.

Wed, 15 Aug 2012 05:19:44 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB Cedric Benson said he can still be a 1,000-yard back in the NFL, even with the Packers being a pass-first offense. "I definitely have a goal to still rush for 1,000, 1,000-plus, and set up some big numbers," Benson said. "I understand it's not a run-first team and the run is not real heavy here, but there's times where a back gets the ball 25 times (in one game). I'm sure if things are rolling (and) the run game is set to the standard that we're hoping to achieve, it could be way more carries than that. I'm just staying positive and optimistic about it, and I know when I get my opportunities, I'm going to make the best of it."
