Cardinals | Brayan Pena placed on DL

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 23:50:49 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Brayan Pena (knee) was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday, July 5. In a corresponding move, C Alberto Rosario was promoted from Class AAA Memphis.

Fantasy Tip: Pena, a very capable backup, lasted less than two weeks after missing most of the first two months of the season following knee surgery. He'll be replaced by Rosario, a 10-year minor-league veteran that's getting his first taste of the majors. He's of no interest.

Cardinals | Two Cardinals starters on the bench

Tue, 05 Jul 2016 13:48:11 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Brandon Moss and C Yadier Molina are not in the starting lineup against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Steven Brault Tuesday, July 5. 2B Jedd Gyorko will start at first base and is batting sixth, while C Brayan Pena will start at catcher and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Gyorko has been a bit inconsistent at the plate over the last few weeks and probably should be avoided in most mixed leagues. Pena was recently activated from the disabled list and has gone hitless in his four at-bats. Owners should see him play in a few more games before using him in their lineups.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina receives day off

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 15:08:22 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina (rest) is not in the lineup Thursday, June 30, versus the Kansas City Royals. C Brayan Pena gets the start behind the plate in his place and will hit seventh against SP Chris R. Young.

Fantasy Tip: It's just a day off for Molina, who should return to the batting order on Friday. The backup veteran Pena will get some rare playing time as a result, but isn't really worth much of a look in daily games for this evening.

Cardinals | Brayan Pena activated

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 10:34:47 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Brayan Pena (knee) was activated from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, June 28. C Eric Fryer was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Pena hasn't played yet this year and should serve as Yadier Molina's primary backup. Pena shouldn't have much fantasy value at all with limited playing time.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina slumping

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 10:50:58 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina is stuck in a 4-for-45 slump entering the game Wednesday, June 1, and he has started 49 of the team's first 54 games. Molina could be rested more once C Brayan Pena (knee) returns in a couple of weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Molina is still hitting .271 with a homer and 19 RBI and remains one of the better fantasy starting catchers to own despite his recent slump. Ride it out and wait for Molina to find his groove at the plate again.

Cardinals | Brayan Pena undergoes surgery

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 20:59:39 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Brayan Pena (knee) underwent surgery to repair loose cartilage in his left knee Tuesday, April 5, and he is expected to be sidelined a month.

Fantasy Tip: With Pena on the shelf, Eric Fryer will serve as the primary backup backstop to Yadier Molina.

Cardinals | Brayan Pena to DL

Sat, 02 Apr 2016 13:46:21 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Brayan Pena (knee) will open the season on the disabled list to remove a loose particle of cartilage in his left knee, an injury that Pena says stems from a dugout slip during the spring. The injury is expected to sideline him two to four weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Pena was slated to begin the season as Yadier Molina's backup catcher - a job that will belong to Eric Fryer for the next few weeks. The biggest fantasy impact here is that Molina may play in a game or two more during that stretch since Fryer has such limited major-league experience.

Cardinals | Still looking for veteran catcher

Fri, 29 Jan 2016 04:55:39 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak is looking for options behind the plate to complement C Yadier Molina and C Brayan Pena.

Fantasy Tip: Molina may not be ready for Opening Day and Pena is little more than a backup that can be pressed into starting duty for a few weeks. The club needs more help, so monitor who the Cardinals get.

Reds | Brayan Pena tests his injuries

Wed, 16 Sep 2015 20:39:27 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Brayan Pena (hamstring) did some crouching and throwing drills Wednesday, Sept. 16, and he caught a bullpen session from SP Anthony DeSclafani. He might return to the lineup sometime during the upcoming series with the Milwaukee Brewers, manager Bryan Price said.

Fantasy Tip: Pena ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) could return sometime soon, but he is still not a useful FantasyScore option until he proves his health in a full game without any setbacks.

Reds | Brayan Pena to miss time

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 21:39:34 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Brayan Pena (hamstring) left the game Wednesday, Sept. 9, against the Pittsburgh Pirates due to a hamstring injury. He said initial test results were positive, but he will have more tests Thursday, Sept. 10. He might only be out a couple of days.

Fantasy Tip: Pena ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) is only worth using in FantasyScore to help save salary to allocate to more valuable positions.
