Reds | Devin Mesoraco sitting

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 15:33:24 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Devin Mesoraco (rest) is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, July 22, against the Milwaukee Brewers. Manager Bryan Price wanted C Brayan Pena to catch SP Homer Bailey. Price also noted Mesoraco is scuffling a bit at the plate.

Fantasy Tip: Pena is dirt cheap on daily sites, and the matchup against rookie Jimmy Nelson isn't terrifying. Pena is a decent low-budget play.

Reds | Brayan Pena has a sore forearm

Tue, 08 Jul 2014 13:35:28 -0700

Cincinnati Reds C Brayan Pena (forearm) is dealing with soreness in his right forearm and does not want to aggravate it. He was scheduled to play in the second game of the team's doubleheader Tuesday, July 8, against the Chicago Cubs, but he is no longer in the starting lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Devin Mesoraco started the first game of the doubleheader, so Tucker Barnhart will catch and bat eighth in game No. 2. Pena was in the plan to spot start at first base occasionally, with Joey Votto on the disabled list, so monitor the situation. Neftali Soto hit another home run last night for Triple-A Louisville, and he is a potential add in NL-only leagues, if he gets recalled.

Reds | Joey Votto to DL

Tue, 08 Jul 2014 08:00:28 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto (quadriceps) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left quadriceps. C/1B Brayan Pena was activated from the paternity list.

Fantasy Tip: Todd Frazier is playing first base Tuesday, July 8, with Ramon Santiago at the hot corner. Jay Bruce started at first base Monday, July 7, with Ryan Ludwick and Skip Schumaker in the corner outfield spots. Expect a rotation with Chris Heisey also involved in the short term if they decide to go that route, but the Santiago elevation to the lineup is more likely. All of these subs are desperation NL-only assets.

Reds | Joey Votto to DL, Jay Bruce activated

Wed, 21 May 2014 12:28:13 -0700

The Cincinnati Reds placed 1B Joey Votto (quadriceps) on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, May 21, and activated OF Jay Bruce (knee) from the DL in a corresponding move. Votto's DL stint is retroactive to May 16.

Fantasy Tip: The good news here is the Reds seriously considered having Votto avoid the DL, because his injury wasn't too serious, and it's not related to his surgically repaired knee. He may not need that much time before returning, but stay tuned. In his absence, the Reds are likely to use some combination of Todd Frazier, Neftali Soto and Brayan Pena at first base. Soto deserves some mild attention in NL-only leagues in the short term.

Reds | Brayan Pena available if needed

Tue, 06 May 2014 19:31:26 -0700

Cincinnati Reds manager Bryan Price said Tuesday, May 6, that C Brayan Pena (hamstring) was available if needed, and was out of the lineup because he wanted to pair C Tucker Barnhart with SP Homer Bailey, not due to the injury. In addition, Price mentioned he likes to use Pena with SP Johnny Cueto.
