Holmes has a shot at the starting job next season because Mike Hollis is expected to leave as a free agent.

Giants | More Worried About Injuries Than Talent |
Mon, 03 Sep 2001 08:30:16 -0700
The Bergen Record's Tara Sullivan reports as the season opener draws near, the New York Giants are more worried about their injury situation than they are about their talent. "I'm not concerned about the quality of this team. I'm very worried about the physical situation," GM Ernie Accorsi said Sunday. "This is a good football team as long as it stays healthy," Accorsi added. The team is basically the same as last season's Super Bowl team with a few exceptions, LB Brandon Short takes over for Ryan Phillips, DT Cornelius Griffin takes over for Christian Peter, DE Kenny Holmes replaces Cedric Jones, PK Morten Andersen replaces the Brad Daluiso/Jaret Holmes tandem, and P Rodney Williams replaces Brad Maynard. WR Ike Hilliard may be the biggest concern right now along with nagging injuries to WRs Amani Toomer and Joe Jurevicius.

Giants | Kicking Game "Terrible" |
Sun, 26 Aug 2001 22:58:58 -0700
The New York Times reports New York Giants coach Jim Fassel described his place kicking game as terrible. PK Jaret Holmes missed the Giants only field-goal attempt, from 44 yards on Saturday and PK John Markham had insufficient hang time on his three kickoffs. He said his decision on a PK would have to be based on performance in practice. This week some PKs could be cut loose and free agents Morten Andersen and Al Del Greco remain on the market. Fassel would not say the Giants were looking to pursue another PK.

Giants | Kickers Battle |
Wed, 22 Aug 2001 17:30:39 -0700
Michael Eisen reports for Giants.com coach Jim Fassel challenged his PKs, Jaret Holmes and rookie John Markham, at the end of practice today. Fassel announced that he would dispense with the 10 40-yard post-practice sprints the players would run - if the kickers could make their field goals. For every successful 3-pointer, he would eliminate two sprints. If they made all four attempts, he would do away with the conditioning entirely. Markham missed from 42- and 47-yards while Holmes hit both his tries from those distances. Holmes was then selected to attempt a double-or-nothing attempt from 50-yards. He slammed it through the uprights.

Giants | PK Notes |
Sun, 29 Apr 2001 01:08:39 -0700
The New York Times reports the New York Giants are pleased so far with rookie PK John Markham. He was the Giants fifth-round draft choice, and the second kicker selected in the NFL Draft. He is the immediate favorite to win the Giants starting PK job. While the Giants have said Markham and Jaret Holmes will compete for the starting job at training camp, there has been plenty of praise from the coaching staff and front office for Markham. Giants GM Ernie Accorsi conceded that Holmes had an equal chance to make the team, but added, "If he wins the job, he will have beat out a heck of a kicker."

Giants | Small List |
Thu, 01 Mar 2001 11:19:02 -0800
NY Newsday reports New York Giants GM Ernie Accorsi is out to improve his team, but his list of needs is short. The team probably will look to fill only two starting jobs (not counting kickers) through free agency or the draft, TE and one cornerback spot. The team would like to replace CB Dave Thomas as a starter, but he should be back as the third or fourth corner in 2001. The team could use depth at defensive end and on the offensive line. PK Brad Daluiso probably won't be re-signed and Jaret Holmes is not a certainty to win the job. The team will tender contracts for the minimum $512,000 to three restricted free agents it wants to keep: WR Joe Jurevicius, FB Greg Comella and CB Emmanuel McDaniel. TE Howard Cross has restructured his contract and LB Mike Barrow might soon. WR Amani Toomer, FS Shaun Williams and eventually DE Michael Strahan could get contract extensions to open up more cap space.
