Hanson also welcomes the competition from P Toby Gowin and sees it as a way for him to improve his game. "Competition is always good. It brings out the best in you. You never know in this business," Hanson said. "It keeps you on your toes. It keeps you competing at a high level. …We can make each other better."

He will also be asked to push PK Josh Scobee, primarily on kickoffs. Gowin has extensive experience as a kickoff specialist. Head coach Jack Del Rio said, "This guy [Gowin] has punted in the league and has kicked off in the league. We want a guy who can do both, because we're not bringing in two [kickers] this year."

Bart Hubbuch, of the Florida Times-Union, reports Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio offered lofty praise to his special teams units after their Week 1 performance last week. "Our special teams were outstanding,'' Del Rio said. "I thought we controlled field position. Our punter (Chris Hanson) was outstanding, and (kicker Josh) Scobee was very, very solid.'' Scobee tied his career high with four field goals while recording four touchbacks on seven kickoffs. Hanson averaged 44 yards on four punts with all four kicks being downed inside the opponents' 20-yard line.

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports Jacksonville Jaguars P Chris Hanson (leg), who suffered a season-ending injury to his "plant" leg during the infamous ax-swinging incident in the team locker room, is recovering well from his surgery and is optimistic about returning for the 2004 season. "My right leg feels as stable as it did before the accident," Hanson said. "I just hope it's going to be like swinging a golf club again. You know, finding that rhythm." Head coach Jack Del Rio has been pleased by Hanson's progress in his rehabilitation. "All the (rehabilitation) checkpoints, he's passed with flying colors," Del Rio said. "He continues to make good progress and that's why I'm confident."

The move means Hanson, who will get credit for an accrued season of free agency for 2003, will be an unrestricted free agent in 2005 instead of 2006.

Jaguars.com reports Jacksonville Jaguars P Chris Hanson's (leg) non-kicking leg has been injured by an axe in the player's locker room. Head coach Jack Del Rio placed the axe, along with a tree stump, in the locker room to symbolize his philosophy of "keep choppin' wood." No word has been given on how or to what exent he was injured. Meanwhile, the team is expected to sign P Mark Royals (Dolphins) as an immediate replacement.

Jaguars.com reports Jacksonville Jaguars P Chris Hanson needs to improve to possibly save his roster spot. Hanson saw his net average drop to 35.4 with a poor performance in Baltimore. Coach Tom Coughlin expressed his dissatisfaction to Hanson this week. "Chris knows I'm not pleased with what happened last weekend and it's got to improve," Coughlin said.
