Philadelphia Phillies minor league manager Ryne Sandberg is likely to remain the skipper for Triple-A Lehigh Valley next year. Sandberg isn't a finalist for the Chicago Cubs' managerial opening and didn't interview with the Boston Red Sox.

Cardinals | More interviews Wednesday

The St. Louis Cardinals are expected to interview third base coach Jose Oquendo and Philadelphia Phillies Class AAA manager Ryne Sandberg for their managerial opening Wednesday, Nov. 9, after interviewing former Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Boston Red Sox president Larry Lucchino said the team will begin their managerial interviews next week and there are estimated to be eight to 10 candidates for the job. Red Sox bench coach DeMarlo Hale, Cleveland Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr., Philadelphia Phillies Class AAA manager Ryne Sandberg, Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Dave Martinez and Philadelphia Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin are believed to be the candidates.

The Boston Red Sox are in the beginning stages of searching for a new manager, but already certain candidates are being ruled out. Toronto Blue Jays first base coach Torey Lovullo and Chicago White Sox minor league manager Joe McEwing are unlikely to be considered. Blue Jays manager John Farrell is also ruled out. Red Sox bench coach DeMarlo Hale, Cleveland Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr., Philadelphia Phillies Class A manager Ryne Sandberg, Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Dave Martinez and Philadelphia Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin are all under consideration. Sleeper candidates would be Atlanta Braves first base coach Terry Pendleton and former manager Ken Macha.

Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington is expected to interview Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach, Milwaukee Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum, Philadelphia Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin and Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Dave Martinez for the team's managerial vacancy. The Red Sox could also be interested in Ryne Sandberg, who is currently the manager of Triple-A Lehigh Valley in the Philadelphia Phillies' organization, although the Chicago Cubs may also be interested in Sandberg if manager Mike Quade is not retained for next season.

If the Chicago Cubs hire Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein, Ryne Sandberg is the favorite to be named manager. Epstein tried to hire Sandberg to manage Triple-A Pawtucket last year.
