Blue Jays | No timetable for Brett Lawrie

Fri, 07 Jun 2013 12:49:29 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 3B Brett Lawrie (ankle) is currently in a walking boot and there is no timetable for his return.

Fantasy Tip: It doesn't look like Lawrie will be back anytime soon. Mark DeRosa, Maicer Izturis and Andy LaRoche will all split reps at third base with Lawrie sidelined. None of the trio will likely see enough time to warrant a roster spot in mixed leagues. AL-only leagues might be a different story, depending on your infield depth.

Blue Jays | Andy LaRoche expected to come up

Thu, 06 Jun 2013 15:38:01 -0700

The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to recall 3B Andy LaRoche from the minors Friday, June 7, because he gives the team more options on the infield with 3B Brett Lawrie (ankle) still on the disabled list. LaRoche will likely share playing time with INFs Maicer Izturis and Mark DeRosa.

Fantasy Tip: LaRoche probably won't see a ton of time alongside Izturis and DeRosa, making him only worthy of a peak in AL-only leagues.

Blue Jays | Emilio Bonifacio playing second base Sunday

Sun, 12 May 2013 09:17:13 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays INF Emilio Bonifacio is starting at second base in place of INF Maicer Izturis for the second consecutive game Sunday, May 12, against the Boston Red Sox. "He's fine," manager John Gibbons said of Izturis. "We just need to get Bonifacio some ABs to see what we've got in him."

Blue Jays | Maicer Izturis has tightness in hamstring

Mon, 22 Apr 2013 16:44:07 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 2B Maicer Izturis (hamstring) is out with tightness in his hamstring Monday, April 22, and 2B Emilio Bonifacio is starting in his place. Bonifacio hasn't played at the keystone since April 12.

Fantasy Tip: Izturis has taken over as the starting second baseman in Toronto because John Gibbons feels it is his natural position. Bonifacio has lost out on playing time with the return of Brett Lawrie (rib cage) to third base and his own defensive woes at the keystone. Bonifacio should still be on rosters in deep mixed leagues for his stolen base contributions, but those opportunities will be fewer and far between.

Blue Jays | Maicer Izturis back where he belongs

Fri, 19 Apr 2013 17:39:43 -0700

While the Toronto Blue Jays could ask 2B Maicer Izturis to play elsewhere at various points during the season, he projects as the regular second baseman for now, which is his natural position in the view of manager John Gibbons.

Blue Jays | Not worried about defensive woes

Thu, 11 Apr 2013 17:43:20 -0700

The Toronto Blue Jays aren't fretting the defensive shortcomings of 2B Emilio Bonifacio or INF Maicer Izturis. Bonifacio has four errors and Izturis has two entering Thursday, April 11. "He's just had a couple of games where it has been a tough go," manager John Gibbons said of Bonifacio. "I don't know him well enough, and I'm not in his head, but he has showed no signs that it has really affected him because he's getting after it out there."

Fantasy Tip: Unfortunately, the Blue Jays don't really have any other options in the infield aside from Mark DeRosa with Brett Lawrie (rib cage) on the DL. Izturis will lose significant playing time when Lawrie returns, but the good news for Bonifacio owners is that it doesn't look like he's being punished for his lack of defense - yet. That may change, however, when Gibbons has the option of Izturis over Bonifacio at the keystone.

Blue Jays | Maicer Izturis, Mark DeRosa to platoon

Mon, 25 Mar 2013 15:53:10 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SS Maicer Izturis will start at third base against right-handers and INF Mark DeRosa will start at third against lefties with 3B Brett Lawrie (rib cage) to start the year on the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Izturis is the better target because of his speed skills, but Lawrie isn't expected to miss much time, limiting their value significantly.

Blue Jays | Race for 2B job continues

Sun, 17 Mar 2013 21:52:28 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Sunday, March 17, that he might not pick a winner for the second base job. Entering spring training, INF Maicer Izturis was believed to have the leg up, but OF Emilio Bonifacio is also in the running. However, Gibbons acknowledged depending in part on pitching matchups, he might rotate Bonifacio and Izturis in and out of the spot.

Blue Jays | Emilio Bonifacio struggling in infield

Fri, 01 Mar 2013 13:20:56 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays 2B Emilio Bonifacio made two throwing errors Friday, March 1, and his struggles in the infield continue. He is competing with INF Maicer Izturis for the starting second base job.

Blue Jays | Manager says 2B up for grabs

Sun, 17 Feb 2013 19:57:29 -0800

Before spring training, Toronto Blue Jays 2B Maicer Izturis was officially the frontrunner for the starting job at second base, but Sunday, Feb. 17, he backtracked. "It's up for grabs," manager John Gibbons said. "We'll see how it all plays out. We'll see in the end what makes us stronger." Izturis is trying to win the job over OF Emilio Bonifacio. Gibbons did say Izturis "has probably got the edge" because he's a "regular middle infielder."

Fantasy Tip: Izturis is considered a better fielder, and Bonifacio the better hitter. Both should be decent middle- to late-round picks on Draft Day in AL-only leagues and some deeper mixed formats, regardless of who wins this battle, as Bonifacio can also play shortstop, third base and all three outfield positions.
