Dolphins | Expected to pursue pass rushers

The Miami Dolphins have just three defensive linemen under contract for 2012 - DLs Tony McDaniel, Jared Odrick and Randy Starks. All three are viewed more as defensive tackle types, and it's clear the Dolphins need more pass rushers.

Dolphins | Could transition to 4-3 defense

Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said the team is considering transitioning to a 4-3 defense next season, and the team currently has the personnel to make such a change successful. Cincinnati Bengals defensive backs coach Kevin Coyle is a leading candidate to become the team's next defensive coordinator. Cincinnati used a 4-3 defense this year. Coyle will interview for the job next week. LB Cameron Wake would play defensive end if the team switched to a 4-3 defensive alignment, with DL Randy Starks likely moving to tackle.

Dolphins | Randy Starks not in football shape at this point

Miami Dolphins DL Randy Starks said he is not in football shape at this point but is doing kickboxing training two to three days a week. He said he will not be able to get into football shape until he starts playing football again. He currently weights 320 pounds, which is about 15 pounds more than his playing weight.

Miami Dolphins DE Kendall Langford said he believes DL Randy Starks will be fine at nose tackle this season because he is strong enough not to be pushed around and is familiar with playing the position, reports Brian Biggane, of the Palm Beach Post. "Anyone who's got the notion he's gonna get in there and get bounced around – that's not gonna happen. He's very strong. He's pretty familiar with the position; he's played inside before. So we'll see," Langford said.

Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano said he has been impressed with how DL Randy Starks has performed at nose tackle during the offseason and sees Starks becoming more comfortable with each practice, reports Brian Biggane, of the Palm Beach Post. "I've been impressed with what he's done with no pads on. I've already seen what he's done with pads on, so I don't really worry about that. He's gotten so much better in the short time we've been out here at feeling those things, it's starting to become old hat to him," Sparano said.

Miami Dolphins DT Randy Starks said he believes he is ready to start at nose tackle this season because he has played defensive tackle before, reports Mike Berardino, of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Starks said he will not look to add or lose any weight in order to play at nose tackle.

Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said the team did not select a nose tackle in the 2010 NFL Draft because they are planning to start DL Randy Starks at the position, according to the Palm Beach Post's Edgar Thompson. First-round draft pick DE Jared Odrick will replace Starks at right defensive end.
