Blue Jays | Roberto Osuna off limits Wednesday

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 08:01:41 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Roberto Osuna is unavailable Wednesday, July 27, along with RP Jesse Chavez. RP Jason Grilli and RP Joaquin Benoit will be called upon to protect late-inning leads.

Fantasy Tip: Grilli might have the upper hand. Benoit has a 5.18 ERA, while Grilli's ERA is 3.63 with a 1.33 WHIP and 50 K's in 34 2/3 innings. His K/9 is the highest it has been since his peak years with the Pittsburgh Pirates. If you have daily pickups, he's worth speculating on today if you're seeking saves.

Tigers | Victor Martinez delivers game-winning HR

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 13:15:42 -0700

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez clubbed his 17th home run - a solo shot off Toronto Blue Jays RP Jason Grilli in the eighth inning - to send the Tigers to a 3-2 win on Saturday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: V-Mart had been kept in the park since a two-homer, six-RBI outburst on July 1. Even at his advanced age of 37, Martinez remains an easy start in fantasy and will carry a .309 average, 17 home runs and 52 RBI into the final game before the All-Star break on Sunday.

Blue Jays | Jason Grilli available to close Saturday

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 10:37:23 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Jason Grilli will be used in a potential save situation versus the Baltimore Orioles Saturday, June 11, according to manager John Gibbons. RP Roberto Osuna is unavailable to pitch after appearing in three of the team's last four games.

Fantasy Tip: Gibbons also announced that Grilli will be used as the Jays' primary setup man going forward, with struggling RP Drew Storen falling further down the club's depth chart. Owners who are desperate for saves should consider adding Grilli, who is 1-2 with a 4.58 ERA and two saves in 25 appearances between Atlanta and Toronto this year.

Blue Jays | Jason Grilli acquired

Tue, 31 May 2016 22:34:45 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Jason Grilli was acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, May 31 in exchange for RP Sean Ratcliffe. Grilli was Atlanta's closer last season before rupturing his Achilles' tendon last July.

Fantasy Tip: Grilli, who went 24-for-26 in save situations last year, has battled control issues (13 walks in 17 innings) and inconsistency this season. Still, he can be nasty when he's on, posting 23 K's in 2016, and he gives Toronto another late-inning option to pair with Joe Biagini and Roberto Osuna. If you're in a league that counts holds you can consider taking a look at Grilli. Otherwise you can ignore the move.

Braves | Jason Grilli notches save

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 19:16:38 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Jason Grilli logged his first save of the season, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out the side in a 6-4 win over the Miami Marlins Saturday, April 16.

Fantasy Tip: With Arodys Vizacaino unavailable after throwing 35 pitches the night before, Grilli was called upon in the ninth. Vizcaino should still see a bulk of the save chances moving forward, but Grilli isnít a bad player to stash if you are hunting for saves.

Braves | Jason Grilli working on things

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 15:23:47 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Jason Grilli pitched a perfect sixth inning Monday, April 11, and manager Fredi Gonzalez said Grilli could work in similar situations as he works his way back from his Achilles' injury. Grilli has a 6.75 ERA in three outings this year with three strikeouts and four walks, including a blown save. Gonzalez said Grilli is fine-tuning his mechanics.

Fantasy Tip: Grilli remains a candidate to record saves alongside Arodys Vizcaino in Atlanta's bullpen, but while he's pitching in non high-pressure situations earlier in games, fantasy owners should consider benching Grilli.

Braves | Jason Grilli coughs up save

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 22:30:59 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Jason Grilli blew the save in the ninth inning Monday, April 4, against the Washington Nationals, and the team ended up losing in extra innings.

Fantasy Tip: Manager Fredi Gonzalez had said matchups will dictate late-inning duties, but he turned to Arodys Vizcaino in a high-tension situation in the eighth inning against the meat of Washington's lineup. The fact Grilled Cheese blew the save in the ninth could pave the way for a quick exit from the closer's role, and a full-time nod for Viz.

Braves | Atlanta to use matchups in ninth inning

Sun, 03 Apr 2016 06:59:10 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Arodys Vizcaino and RP Jason Grilli will be part of a matchup-based closing mix for the Braves.

Fantasy Tip: Vizcaino had a great spring with 11 K's in seven scoreless innings. He has the leg up on Grilli. Both are RP3's in fantasy, but Vizcaino has the edge.

Braves | Jason Grilli looks to be ready

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 11:12:49 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Jason Grilli (Achilles') pitched a scoreless inning Sunday, March 20, and he is showing that he should be ready for opening day after throwing in two spring games after a March 11 simulated game. His fastball was at 94 mph Sunday, so his arm strength is almost back to normal. Grilli is expected to make at least five more appearances before the regular season. The Braves will choose between Grilli and RP Arodys Vizcaino for the closer role. Vizcaino has looked good this spring, giving up three hits and striking out 11 in six spring innings. RP Jim Johnson projects to be the setup man.

Fantasy Tip: The Braves could go with a closer-by-committee to start the year between Grilli and Vizcaino, which will limit both of their fantasy upside. Grilli is a veteran and has the experience, but Vizcaino has the upside after proving worthy of the job in 2015. Both relievers are endgame selections as your third fantasy closer.
