Thu, 16 May 2013 16:42:54 -0700 Boston Red Sox RP Joel Hanrahan (elbow) wound up having Tommy John surgery on his elbow Thursday, May 16, and had his flexor tendon operated on, too. Fantasy Tip: Hanrahan is done for this season and will miss at least the first month of next season, as well. Drop him in all leagues.
Sat, 11 May 2013 09:49:09 -0700 Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox RP Joel Hanrahan (forearm) said that he has decided to undergo season-ending surgery next week to repair a damaged flexor tendon in his right arm. The procedure will be performed by Dr. James Andrews and will require six to nine months of recovery time. If Andrews discovers ligament damage, Tommy John surgery could also be required.
Fri, 10 May 2013 15:20:38 -0700 Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox RP Joel Hanrahan (forearm) is dealing with damage to his flexor tendon, which is the tendon that protects the ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow. He will need to decide if he'll try resting or undergoing season-ending surgery. Fantasy Tip: If Hanrahan chooses rest over surgery, he might be forced to refrain from throwing for as long as six weeks. That course of action may inevitably lead to surgery, too. Either way, this looks like a lost season for Hanrahan. Dumping him is your best option.
Fri, 10 May 2013 13:09:48 -0700 Boston Red Sox RP Joel Hanrahan's (forearm) meeting with Dr. James Andrews Friday, May 10, confirmed a flexor tendon issue, and there doesn't appear to be any ligament damage. However, no decision has been made as to whether he will need surgery. Fantasy Tip: Tommy John surgery could still be in Hanrahan's future if he elects to rest and rehab his arm and it doesn't fix the issue. Either way, Hanrahan doesn't figure to return to the team's bullpen any time soon. You shouldn't wait around to find out in mixed leagues.
Thu, 09 May 2013 12:49:58 -0700 The Boston Red Sox moved RP Joel Hanrahan (forearm) to the 60-day disabled list Thursday, May 9, to open a roster spot for RP Jose De La Torre. Surgery for Hanrahan is "definitely a possibility." Fantasy Tip: It's looking more and more like Hanrahan will need Tommy John surgery or another major procedure on his right forearm. He won't be back any time soon, and with the other bullpen arms that can pitch in the ninth inning in Boston, he won't be saving ballgames in the near future, either. Drop him in most formats.
Thu, 09 May 2013 11:04:06 -0700 Boston Red Sox RP Joel Hanrahan (forearm) is dealing with a badly bruised and discolored right elbow, and he is now fearing that he might have a more serious injury than originally believed. The concern is that the flexor pronator strain in his forearm could also involved damage to his ulnar collateral ligament, which would require Tommy John surgery in a worst-case scenario. Hanrahan's initial MRI exam showed no structural damage. Fantasy Tip: Hanrahan had a flexor pronator injury back with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2010 but was rested and came out of that fine. This situation appears to be much worse, but we won't know exactly what his prognosis is until this weekend. Worst-case sceneario is that Hanrahan will miss the entire year and some of next season. Even if surgery isn't needed, though, he's likely to miss extended time. It's safe to drop him in deep mixed leagues at this point.
Wed, 08 May 2013 18:57:53 -0700 The Boston Red Sox have sent the MRIs on RP Joel Hanrahan's (forearm) injured right forearm to Dr. James Andrews and Dr. David Altchek for examination. Hanrahan will not be doing anything until the team hears from the doctors.
Tue, 07 May 2013 16:12:19 -0700 Boston Red Sox RP Joel Hanrahan (forearm) is out indefinitely with a flexor pronator strain in his right arm, but he is confident he won't need surgery to fix the issue. He will likely seek a second opinion to make sure, however. "After the MRI came back, it was clear that he has inflammation in the right forearm, there is a strain to the right forearm," manager John Farrell said. "It's probably going to be a period of time for a shutdown and a recovery for him, so that's where Joel's at right now." Hanrahan said the injury is similar to the one he had with the Pittsburgh Pirates back in 2010 that caused him to miss six games of the regular season out of spring training. Fantasy Tip: It's pretty safe to say that Hanrahan won't be ready to come off the DL when he's eligible, and it may be some time after that before he's ready to return. By then, Andrew Bailey (biceps) is likely to be back from his DL stint and back in the closer's role. It'll likely take a perfect storm of happenings for Hanrahan to have any length of stretch where he jumps back into the closer's role.
Tue, 07 May 2013 14:26:00 -0700 Boston Red Sox RP Joel Hanrahan's (forearm) MRI exam showed no tears in his right forearm Tuesday, May 7. There is no timetable for his return from the disabled list, however. Fantasy Tip: Hanrahan dodged a bullet, but the fact remains that he's been awful for the Red Sox so far this year, and he hasn't been able to stay healthy. He likely lost his opportunity to reassert himself in the closer's role, too. If you have other pressing needs, he's worth dropping in mixed leagues.
Tue, 07 May 2013 13:23:18 -0700 The Boston Red Sox placed RP Joel Hanrahan (forearm) on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm strain Tuesday, May 7, and recalled SP Allen Webster from Triple-A Pawtucket in a corresponding move. Webster will make the start Wednesday, May 8, and SP Felix Doubront will move to the bullpen starting Tuesday. Fantasy Tip: It's probably safe now to drop Hanrahan in mixed leagues since Andrew Bailey (biceps) is expected to return from the DL before him. Hanrahan lost his opportunity to work his way back into the closer's role, and now Junichi Tazawa is closing out games. Webster could be valuable in AL leagues depending on how long he'll stick in the rotation.
