Megan Manfull, writing for the Sporting News, reports Houston Texans LB Sam Cowart missed all of the offseason workouts with minor injuries, but will likely push LB Wali Rainer early in camp for the middle linebacker starting job. It's the position most up in the air on the Texans. Rookie LB DeMeco Ryans could also possibly enter the fray in training camp. The coaches are high on Ryans, and still deciding between playing him at outside or inside.

FOXSports.com reports Houston Texans rookie LB DeMeco Ryans is currently playing behind LB Morlon Greenwood at outside linebacker and LB Wali Rainer in the middle. He is making big strides at both positions, however, and will be pushing for the starting jobs in training camp. "We think he has a bright, bright future," defensive coordinator Richard Smith said. "And he's a young person that we feel can come in here and compete for a starting position on this team. But he's got to earn that spot. And that's what we're trying to get accomplished right now. We're trying to develop him into a starter. He brings youth, speed, and athletic ability to the position."

Megan Manfull, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans LB DeMeco Ryans is learning nearly every linebacker position with the team. Ryans is as poised as a veteran linebacker when receiving calls from defensive coordinator Richard Smith and relaying them to his teammates during practice. Head coach Gary Kubiak said, "He's been able to handle a lot of things on the defensive side. He's a fine football player; we know that. But his intelligence is going to help him play very quickly." Ryans is currently sitting behind LB Morlon Greenwood at outside linebacker and LB Wali Rainer at middle linebacker.

Megan Manfull, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans LB Sam Cowart (calf, Achilles' tendon) was injured the first day of practice last week and is still sidelined with a sore calf and sore Achilles. He could return as early as next week but is definitely targeting the start of minicamp June 7. Cowart is slated to be the Texans' starting middle linebacker since LB Kailee Wong (knee) remains sidelined because of knee surgery. LB Wali Rainer has been practicing with the first team in Cowart's place.

Bill Williamson, of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, reports Detroit Lions LB Wali Rainer will not recieve a fine for his hit on Minnesota Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper, who broke three bones in his back on the play. The Vikings sent the play in for review by the league, but were told it was a legal hit. On the contrary, three Vikings' players were fined for taunting and prolonged celebration, respectively, against the Lions.

Green has been an outside linebacker but played exclusively in the middle during the recent minicamp. Since then, the team signed free agent MLB Wali Rainer. Mariucci said Green did a nice job in the middle but is "well-suited" to play on the weak side.

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Detroit Lions have reached a contract agreement with free agent LB Wali Rainer (Jaguars) on a two-year, $1.83 million deal, which includes a signing bonus of $475,000. He'll have base salaries of $530,000 (2003) and $750,000 (2004). There is also a $75,000 roster bonus in 2004.

The Tampa Tribune reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will visit with free agent LB Wali Rainer (Jaguars) on Friday, according to Rainer's agent, Ricky Lefft. "Wali is supposed to be down there [today] and hopefully we can begin talking contract with the Bucs right away," Lefft said. Bart Hubbuch reports for the Florida Times-Union LB Wali Rainer will get his chance to start as the Jacksonville Jaguars new middle linebacker come training camp. The team acquired him in a draft weekend trade for a relatively cheap price. "We picked up a player who's been in the league and gives us someone who can come in, knows the game and can be effective on a short-term basis," Jaguars coach Tom Coughlin said. The knock on Rainer is a lack of quickness, which doesn't exactly fit with defensive coordinator John Pease's emphasis on defensive speed. That may be the reason he has not been promised a starting job, just yet. A chance is all Rainer wants.

In an update to a previous story, Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com the Cleveland Browns are not drawing much interest in their attempts to trade MLB Wali Rainer. More surprising is the Browns have reportedly phoned a few teams to see if there is any trade interest in OLB Jamir Miller. Miller has two seasons left on his contract and the Browns would save roughly $2.2 million in cap space if they dealt Miller this weekend. The Browns are hoping to get at least two or three instant contributors in the NFL Draft.

"There's nothing that's led us to believe they won't be ready on Sunday," Davis said. Barring any setback, Jackson and Rainer both should start. Davis said that Fuller and Rainer would not be able to play this Sunday if they missed Thursdayís practice.
