He dispensed glowing words of strong-side LB Na’il Diggs, but he had yet to see enough of MLB Hardy Nickerson and weak-side linebacker Nate Wayne to judge their play from last season. He said it’s premature to say whether or not Nickerson will be re-signed. "I really don’t know," Duffner said of Nickerson’s status. "All I do know is the guy has had a phenomenal professional career, and it would be a privilege to work with him."

Packers | Holes On Defense Could Pose Problems

Mon, 06 Jan 2003 09:49:15 -0800

PackersNews.com reports the Green Bay Packers will be faced with some tough issues in trying to upgrade their defense this off-season. The team is about $1 million under the projected salary cap for next season, and that doesn't include tender offers they'll need to give to DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila and Na'il Diggs. They can clear $4 million in cap room by either cutting or reaching a new contract agreement with CB Tyrone Williams. DT Cledius Hunt and DE Vonnie Holliday will be unrestricted free agents, and it's more likely the Packers will retain Hunt. It is also unlikely they will bring back LB Hardy Nickerson or sign DT Gilbert Brown to even the NFL minimum.
