Marlins | Rafael Furcal, Greg Dobbs take hacks

Tue, 25 Mar 2014 14:07:34 -0700

Miami Marlins 2B Rafael Furcal (hamstring) and 3B Greg Dobbs (quadriceps, back) both took some at-bats in a minor league game Tuesday, March 25, with Furcal going 1-for-6 with a walk and Dobbs going 1-for-5 with a single. Dobbs will be on the opening day roster, but Furcal will need to continue improving to make the squad.

Marlins | Casey Kotchman to be primary first baseman

Mon, 03 Jun 2013 16:09:26 -0700

Miami Marlins manager Mike Redmond said 1B Casey Kotchman will be the team's primary first baseman, and 3B Greg Dobbs will return to a bench role.

Fantasy Tip: The light-hitting Kotchman isn't very attractive in mixed formats, but he could be useful for those playing in NL leagues. Logan Morrison (knee) may be returning soon, too, making Kotchman a short-term option.

Marlins | Matt Diaz to DL

Mon, 20 May 2013 12:40:26 -0700

The Miami Marlins placed OF Matt Diaz (knee) on the 15-day disabled list with a left knee bone bruise Monday, May 20, and recalled OF Jordan Brown from Triple-A New Orleans. Diaz was hitting only .167 (3-for-18) in 10 games this year. Brown can play first base and left field, but he last played in the majors in 2010. Brown was batting .261 with one homer and 12 RBIs in 37 games for New Orleans.

Fantasy Tip: Brown could have value in deep NL-only leagues he he splits time at first base with Greg Dobbs. Otherwise, he'll likely just serve as outfield depth.

Marlins | Logan Morrison, Casey Kotchman rehabbing

Mon, 13 May 2013 10:22:18 -0700

Miami Marlins 1B Logan Morrison (knee) has been serving as the designated hitter in extended spring training, and he'll start playing first base in games next week. 1B Casey Kotchman (hamstring) should begin a rehab assignment next week.

Fantasy Tip: Greg Dobbs has been playing first base regularly with Morrison, Kotchman and Joe Mahoney (hamstring) all sidelined. Kotchman should be back before Morrison or Mahoney, which will push Dobbs back into a utility role. Morrison is the best fantasy option of this group, but his recovery from serious knee surgery clouds his production and power potential whenever he returns. He's probably not worth a roster spot in mixed leagues until he returns from the DL.

Marlins | Casey Kotchman heading to DL

Thu, 04 Apr 2013 11:57:57 -0700

Miami Marlins 1B Casey Kotchman (hamstring) will be put on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring Friday, April 5. A corresponding roster move will be made then. Kotchman said he heard a pop while running out a double-play ground ball. 3B Greg Dobbs was playing first base Thursday, April 4, but OFs Austin Kearns and Chris Valaika and C Miguel Olivo are possibilities to take over at first.

Fantasy Tip: None of the options to replace Kotchman at first base are worth looks except in cavernous NL-only leagues as corner infield depth.

Marlins | Injury updates

Fri, 08 Mar 2013 16:27:09 -0800

Miami Marlins 3B Placido Polanco (back) will sit out a few more games while dealing with back spasms. "He's having that same problem," manager Mike Redmond said. "No timetable. He's got to figure out what's going on, what's grabbing on him and where he is." OF Justin Ruggiano (back) is scheduled to play Saturday, March 9, in center field. OF Jake Marisnick (hand) hit in the cages and did fielding drills Friday, March 8. 3B Greg Dobbs (calf) continues to do drills but isn't playing in games.

Marlins | Logan Morrison rehab update

Tue, 05 Feb 2013 09:44:15 -0800

Miami Marlins OF Logan Morrison (knee), who will be transitioning from left field to first base this season, will not be running at full strength when camp begins, but he may be cleared to pick up the pace at the end of the month. "We're going to be patient," president Larry Beinfest said. "We'll wait for him to be back. We'll work with Dr. Steadman and Dr. Kaplan on anything that's going on with the knee." There is still a chance Morrison won't be ready by opening day. 1B Joe Mahoney is expected to see a good look at first with Morrison still recovering during spring training. 3B Greg Dobbs and OF Austin Kearns will also see work at first.

Marlins | Placido Polanco not an everyday player?

Tue, 29 Jan 2013 21:19:06 -0800

Miami Marlins executive Larry Beinfest said Tuesday, Jan. 29, that because 3B Placido Polanco is "coming off injury, it's realistic to say (he's) probably not going to be an everyday player. If he's at third five days a week, it's going to be terrific. (3B Greg Dobbs) can still play over there against tough right-handers."
