Thu, 24 Feb 2011 19:06:58 -0800 St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa and general manager John Mozeliak said they plan to fill the extra spot in the rotation from within, according to MLB.com's Matthew Leach. Right now, RP Kyle McClellan appears to be the front-runner for the job after SP Adam Wainwright (elbow) has been pronounced out for the year. However, if McClellan is converted to a starter, it would put more pressure on RPs Mitchell Boggs and Jason Motte in the bullpen. If the team goes with either SPs Lance Lynn or P.J. Walters, it wouldn't tax the bullpen as much. Pitching coach Dave Duncan has made it no secret that he prioritizes the rotation above the bullpen, and that he is a backer of McClellan. SPs Miguel Batista and Ian Snell both appear to be long shots for the extra spot. Batista is likely to be the team's swing man. SP Adam Ottavino (shoulder) is coming off a shoulder injury and is unlikely to win the spot.
Wed, 23 Feb 2011 19:23:42 -0800 St. Louis Cardinals SPs Miguel Batista, Ian Snell, P.J. Walters, Lance Lynn and Kyle McClellan could be asked to step into the rotation if SP Adam Wainwright (elbow) is lost for the year, according to MLB.com's Marty Noble. McClellan appears to be the favorite for the job.
Wed, 23 Feb 2011 11:16:13 -0800 Updating an ongoing story, St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright (elbow) could have a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow, which would require Tommy John surgery and for him to miss the entire 2011 season, according to SI.com's Will Carroll. SP Ian Snell could fill a spot in the rotation is Wainwright misses significant time.
Sun, 13 Feb 2011 01:26:47 -0800 Updating a previous report, St. Louis Cardinals SP Ian Snell may not automatically be going to Triple-A Memphis at the end of spring training. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold reports Snell will begin spring as a starter but may be converted for the long-relief opening in the bullpen.
