Nationals | Skipper considering closer committee

Tue, 22 May 2012 06:39:39 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Henry Rodriguez was pulled from a save opportunity Monday, May 21, after allowing a hit and a walk. RP Sean Burnett closed the door. Manager Davey Johnson said that he's going to consider alternatives to Rodriguez, and a closer committee could be looming.

Fantasy Tip: RPs Craig Stammen, Sean Burnett and Tyler Clippard could figure to receive save opportunities. However, Johnson was hesitant to move Clippard into the role when Drew Storen (elbow) went down because he wanted continuity with the setup roles. Stammen is having a phenomenal year with a 1.44 ERA, and he could get the first look. He pitched two innings yesterday, though, so he may need a day or two of rest.

Nationals | Sean Burnett tried for more movement

Wed, 29 Feb 2012 15:31:56 -0800

Washington Nationals RP Sean Burnett said he spent the offseason tinkering with new grips on his pitches in order to create more movement, and the results this spring have been encouraging. "My biggest thing is, I need movement," Burnett said. "Last year at times, I think stuff flattened out. As long as I've been pitching, that's the key to my sinker, getting it off the end of the bat." He said he struggled in 2011 mainly because he wasn't challenged in spring training. His sinker was almost too effective, getting him through innings fast so that he didn't have enough time to work on developing his other pitches.

Nationals | Sean Burnett made move on rubber

Wed, 14 Sep 2011 16:47:34 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Sean Burnett made the decision to move across the pitching rubber, from the third base side to the first base side, back in July. Since making the change, Burnett has given up three earned runs in 19 2/3 innings over 22 games for a 1.37 ERA. "It's such a huge difference," Burnett said. "It doesn't seem like it'd be such a big difference, but the arm angle and the angles the hitter gets, it's damn near impossible to pick it up."
