Dejan Kovacevic, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports the Pittsburgh Pirates signed free-agent SP Sean Smith (Rockies), P Lincoln Holdzkom (Red Sox), OF Jonel Pacheco (Pirates), C Zach Booker (Indians), P Edwin Walker and P Eduardo Pena to minor league deals Tuesday, Dec. 31. The deals do not include invitations to Spring Training. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Updating a previous post, The Arlington Heights Daily Herald's Bruce Miles reports P Lincoln Holdzkom, whom the Houston Astros claimed in December's Rule 5 draft, has cleared outright waivers and was returned to the Chicago Cubs. Holdzkom will report to the Cubs' minor-league camp.

The Houston Chronicle reports Houston Astros P Lincoln Holdzkom, a Rule V draftee, was hammered for four hits and five runs in two-thirds of an inning as the Astros fell 13-2 on March 1 against the Cleveland Indians.

Updating a previous post, The Houston Chronicle is reporting the contracts signed Feb. 27 by Houston Astros P Matt Albers, P Jimmy Barthmaier, P Paul Estrada, P Lincoln Holdzkom, P Mark S. McLemore, OF Josh Anderson and IF Brooks Conrad calls for a major-league minimum salary of $380,000 if they reach the majors and at least $320,000 significantly less in the minors. Per the new collective bargaining agreement, Estrada and Conrad will be paid $30,000 in the minors as players in their first year on the 40-man roster. The other five players will get $60,000 in their second year on the 40-man roster.
