White Sox | Ronald Belisario loses closer job

Fri, 27 Jun 2014 20:49:26 -0700

Chicago White Sox RP Ronald Belisario will no longer be the team's closer, according to manager Robin Ventura. RP Jake Petricka received the save Friday, June 27, and is an option to close. Ventura has not decided who will fill the role at this point.

Fantasy Tip: Petricka likely will be in the mix since he got the chance Friday. Zach Putnam and Javy Guerra could also receive save chances in the upcoming weeks. Matt Lindstrom (ankle) could also be back in a few weeks and take over the role. Owners could consider adding one of them at this point but could also wait to see if Ventura names a closer.

White Sox | Ronald Belisario gets vote of confidence

Tue, 24 Jun 2014 19:28:42 -0700

Chicago White Sox CL Ronald Belisario is still the team's closer, according to manager Robin Ventura. "You do have the ability to change it any time you want, but right now I would say, if we're winning tonight, he's going back out there," Ventura said Tuesday, June 24. "That's just the way it is."

Fantasy Tip: Ventura is standing by his closer for now, but Belisario owns an ugly 5.50 ERA so a change could be coming sooner rather than later. If you are desperate for saves, Javy Guerra and Zach Putnam are the two players to consider stashing.

White Sox | Ronald Belisario blows save

Tue, 24 Jun 2014 06:06:19 -0700

Chicago White Sox CL Ronald Belisario blew his fourth save Monday, June 23, allowing a three-run homer. It was his first blown save in nearly a month.

Fantasy Tip: The outing raised his ERA from 4.79 to 5.50, and his seat should start to get warmer. He has had little competition for the role, however. Daniel Webb is still struggling with his control, and Scott Downs' best days are behind him. Javy Guerra is one to watch. The former Los Angeles Dodgers closer has 12 K's in 12 1/3 innings and a 2.19 ERA.

White Sox | Ronald Belisario still the closer

Fri, 30 May 2014 14:27:37 -0700

Chicago White Sox RP Ronald Belisario is still the closer, per manager Robin Ventura.

Fantasy Tip: Really? Ventura is standing by his man. But the RP is not giving skip many save conversions to cling to, after all, even if he may be doing the best he can. Daniel Webb is pretty close to stopping this song if Belisario can't do his job.

White Sox | Leaning toward Ronald Belisario

Thu, 22 May 2014 07:08:21 -0700

Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura said RP Ronald Belisario is the leading candidate to fill in as closer. Asked if he will be comfortable with Belisario as the closer, Ventura said: "We're going to have to. These are the guys that we have, and I think Beli has pitched well enough to be that guy to step in and do it. He can go multiple innings if you need him to. Right now I think (he will step) in that spot and everybody just needs to fill in and figure it out."

Fantasy Tip: Belisario needs to be added in all leagues if you're in need of saves. He has a 4.15 ERA, but he has been a different pitcher in May with a 0.87 ERA, 0.58 WHIP and 9 K's in 10 1/3 innings. Nate Jones (back) has yet to resume baseball activities since having back surgery and probably won't fit into the picture for at least a month. Daniel Webb could figure into the mix, but he has struggled with control. Belisario looks safe in the short term.

White Sox | Matt Lindstrom needs surgery

Wed, 21 May 2014 16:11:04 -0700

Chicago White Sox RP Matt Lindstrom (ankle) will need to undergo surgery on his left ankle and will be out for an extended amount of time, according to manager Robin Ventura. There is no official timetable listed for Lindstrom's return, but Ventura knows it'll be more than 15 days. He is expected to pitch again this year. RP Ronald Belisario closed out a save chance in the game Tuesday, May 20.

Fantasy Tip: Belisario should be your first target for save opps, but he hasn't been that great this year and could share duties with either Daniel Webb or Frank Francisco. Unless you're in a bind in the saves column, it might be best to avoid this situation.

White Sox | Not naming a closer

Wed, 21 May 2014 08:32:32 -0700

Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura said the team won't name a closer with RP Matt Lindstrom (ankle) on the disabled list. "We're not going to name a closer," Ventura said. "We have options, guys who can do it. Even guys who are pitching in the eighth could go in the ninth. We have guys who can go multiple innings."

Fantasy Tip: Ventura typically likes to torture fantasy owners with indecision on such matters. Ronald Belisario earned the first save in the absence of Lindstrom Tuesday night, and he figures to be in the lead, but it's no sure thing. Daniel Webb and Frank Francisco could also have a say when all is said and done.
