Reds | Alfredo Simon torched by Indians

Tue, 17 May 2016 19:56:14 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Alfredo Simon had a night to forget in his start Tuesday, May 17, against the Cleveland Indians. He lasted just 4 1/3 innings, yielding 10 runs on 14 hits. He also walked one and struck out two.

Fantasy Tip: Yikes. For owners in deep leagues that were still holding onto Simon for whatever reason, you might want to reconsider that. Simon holds absolutely zero value, pitching for one of the worst teams in all of baseball -- and one that also plays in a hitter-friendly home park. He now has a disastrous 10.34 ERA this season.

Reds | Alfredo Simon takes third loss

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 22:59:07 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Alfredo Simon dropped to 0-3 on the year in a 5-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, April 30. Simon allowed three runs in over six innings, walked four and struck out four.

Fantasy Tip: Simon's ERA dropped from 16.39 to 13.50, which means he's still not out of the woods yet for fantasy players. Not only does Simon not have a victory, he has gotten off to a subpar start. Leave him off your roster until Simon stabilizes further.

Cubs | Anthony Rizzo clubs a pair in rout

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 14:45:54 -0700

Chicago Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo continued to keep pace with a major-league leaders in homers and RBI on Sunday, April 24, blasting a pair of two-run home runs off Cincinnati Reds SP Alfredo Simon.

Fantasy Tip: Rizzo (eight homers, 21 RBI) is batting only .203 but trails only Bryce Harper (nine, 23) in both power categories, and has five home runs as well as 10 RBI over his last five contests. It's scary to think what he could do if actually catches fire sometime soon, although his home run and RBI production should be enough for owners to overlook the other way when it comes to his early poor batting average.

Reds | Alfredo Simon plays catch Thursday

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 11:19:12 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Alfredo Simon (shoulder) played catch Thursday, April 21, and has shown improvement after being scratched from his start Tuesday, April 19. As of now, he's still listed as the starter for Sunday, April 24, against the Chicago Cubs, but if he is unable to make that assignment, the team would likely recall SP Robert Stephenson to replace him.

Fantasy Tip: Simon enjoyed notable success with the Reds as recent as two seasons ago, but has looked like a different pitcher since, hence why owners should be avoiding him in all leagues until he gets into a groove. He owns a disastrous 12.15 ERA and 2.55 WHIP through his first two starts and one relief appearance. If he is scratched again, Stephenson isn't really worth a look either.

Reds | Alfredo Simon scratched Tuesday

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 08:59:57 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Alfredo Simon (biceps) was scratched from his start Tuesday, April 19, against the Colorado Rockies with biceps tendonitis. SP Robert Stephenson was recalled from Class AAA Louisville to make the start. Simon is expected to take his next turn.

Fantasy Tip: Stephenson made an unimpressive start earlier this year and doesn't have the clout to make a good streamer option today.

Reds | Alfredo Simon to face north siders

Mon, 11 Apr 2016 23:54:57 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Alfredo Simon will take the ball for a road start against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, April 13. He is 4-0 with a 1.66 ERA in 15 career appearances, including five starts, against the Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Simon might be a decent low-end DFS option if he can continue to vex the Cubs. He is worth a look in most NL-only fantasy formats, but avoid him in mixed play.

Reds | Alfredo Simon solid again

Sun, 27 Mar 2016 16:43:22 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Alfredo Simon turned in his second strong start on Sunday, March 27, holding the Los Angeles Dodgers to one run on two hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: Simon worked three perfect innings in his spring debut on Tuesday, so it might be time to start paying attention to him as a possible late-round option in deeper mixed leagues. The 34-year-old figures to struggle earning double-digit wins with the rebuilding Reds and isn't going to strike out many batters, but he is only two years removed from an All-Star appearance and could round out a fantasy rotation nicely if he can recapture that form.

Reds | Alfredo Simon solid in his return

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 23:02:04 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Alfredo Simon pitched three perfect innings in his Cactus League spring debut Tuesday, March 22, against the Chicago Cubs. He needed just 29 pitches for the outing, and threw another 15 in the bullpen afterwards.

Fantasy Tip: Simon could be a late and welcome addition to the rotation. He is just two years removed from an All-Star season in his first stint with the Reds. He is worth a look in the later rounds in NL-only fantasy play.

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 21:08:22 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SP Alfredo Simon is scheduled to make his first Cactus League spring appearance Tuesday, March 22. He is expected to pitch at least into the third inning.

Fantasy Tip: Simon shined in 2014 in his first stint with the Reds, posting 15 wins with a 3.44 ERA and 127 strikeouts over 196 1/3 innings in an All-Star campaign. He is an innings eater capable of double-digit victories even with a poor team.

Reds | Alfredo Simon signs with Reds

Thu, 17 Mar 2016 11:17:25 -0700

Free-agent SP Alfredo Simon (Tigers) signed a one-year deal with the Cincinnati Reds Thursday, March 17.

Fantasy Tip: Simon had an ugly year in the American League last season and returns to the spot he had his best seasons. There are questions at the end of the Reds' rotation, and Simon could steal a spot. He's just an NL-only option for now.
