Vito Stellino reports for the Florida Times-Union the Jacksonville Jaguars are currently looking at Marcus Stroud and Larry Smith as their starting defensive tackles for the 2002 season. The primary backup is Tim Morabito. The Jaguars are high on Stroud, Smith and Morabito, but questions about them explain why a defensive tackle will be a priority in the draft. There are four blue-chip defensive tackles in the draft likely to go in the top half of the first round, but the Jaguars hope to land one of them. New defensive coordinator John Pease likes the potential of Stroud and Smith despite their inexperience. Smith concedes this is a critical year for him as he enters his fourth season.

The Charlotte Observer reports the Carolina Panthers are about $721,000 below the 2002 salary cap. RB Tshimanga Biakabutuka, CB Doug Evans, QB Jeff Lewis, DT Tim Morabito, DE Jason Peter and DE Chuck Smith are still counting for about $9.9 million in "dead money."

Updating last week's story, the Miami Herald reports the Miami Dolphins worked out free agent DTs Tim Morabito and Tom Brandt on Monday. The team is still looking to add a DT to their roster. The Dolphins previously looked at Ryan Hale, Henry Taylor and Jason Wiltz and may soon sign one of those five players.

Bengals.com's Geoff Hobson reports the team has re-signed DE Jevon Langford. He had been released on Sunday. Langford's agent, Peter Schaffer, confirmed an ESPN.com report Wednesday night, opening up speculation DE John Copeland's injury (see previous story) could be serious enough to land him on season-ending IR list because the Bengals are one player over the 53-man roster. The Bengals had no comment, but Schaffer said Langford plans to sign a three-year contract Thursday morning and practice Thursday afternoon. Also, the Bengals worked out veteran DT Tim Morabito Wednesday after his release from Carolina. Finally, the team waived WR Damon Griffin, with an injury settlement.

The Boston Herald reports the New England Patriots have one roster spot open and the team is expected to fill the spot shortly, possibly with a nose tackle. Some of the names being thrown around include Tim Morabito, who the club had in for a tryout last year. Other names being mentioned are Russell Maryland and former Jet Ernie Logan.

The Associated Press reports the New York Jets have signed veteran DT Steve Martin, just released by the Chiefs. He helps to fill the gap left by the injury to Jason Ferguson. He signed a one-year deal for the veteran's minimum of $477,000, with incentives that could increase the salary to $625,000. Martin will be a backup to seventh-round draft choice James Reed, currently the team's starter. The Jets chose Martin rather than several other veterans, including Tim Morabito, who was cut by Carolina, and former Jet Ernie Logan. The team did not bring in Russell Maryland as expected. New York also claimed LB Jason Glenn off waivers from Detroit. The team cut DT Maurice Anderson and placed Ferguson on injured reserve to free the needed roster spots.

Coach George Seifert suggested Jenkins will get first shot at winning the starting job, despite the presence of DTs Tim Morabito and Brentson Buckner on the roster.

The Gaston Gazette reports Carolina Panthers DL Tim Morabito has restructured his contract with the team. He was set to have base salaries of $1.2 million (2001) and $1.6 million (2002), but has had his base salaries reduced to $500,000 (2001) and $600,000 (2002).

C Jeff Mitchell tweaked his knee during Friday's morning practice but should be fine. PK John Kasay (knee), DE Jason Peter (knee), DE Chuck Smith (knee) are not taking part in this week's mini-camp, but should be ready to return for the start of training camp. DT Tim Morabito, S Tony Booth, S Deon Grant (hip), WR Jim Turner and DE Robert Daniel are expected to be ready to participate in training camp and could be available for the team's June mini-camp.
