Howard thinks he'll return in the six-month window, while Philadelphia 76ers power forward Elton Brand thinks it will be eight months. Brand suffered a similar injury. An eight-month window would put Howard out until late June or July.

Manuel said team doctors have termed Howard "ahead of schedule." The team still projects Howard to return some time in May.

He is still recovering from offseason surgery on his left Achilles' tendon. Howard was recently cleared to resume strength-building exercises and some weight-bearing activities. "We're still being very cautious with him," Amaro said.

He will begin jogging underwater and is likely to resume baseball activities in four to six weeks. The team is refusing to speculate on whether Howard will be ready by Opening Day.

"We think we're going to be healthy other than, perhaps, a delay on [first baseman Ryan Howard, recovering from a torn Achilles tendon]."
