Phillies | Ryan Howard not in the lineup

Sun, 22 May 2016 09:57:44 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is not in the starting lineup against Atlanta Braves SP Casey Kelly Sunday, May 22. 1B Tommy Joseph will start at first base and is batting fourth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Joseph has gone 4-for-12 with one home run and one RBI since being recalled from the minor leagues. Joseph should be a starting option in some daily fantasy leagues, but owners in mixed leagues should find better options.

Phillies | Strict platoon at 1B for Phils

Fri, 20 May 2016 14:20:42 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Tommy Joseph likely won't see much action this weekend against an Atlanta Braves rotation that is heavily right-handed. Joseph is 4-for-10 with a home run since being called up from Class AAA Lehigh Valley last Friday. Head coach Pete Mackanin is heavily committed to a platoon at first base with Joseph and 1B Ryan Howard, with Howard seeing most of the starts against righties.

Fantasy Tip: Both Joseph and Howard can be useful in deeper mixed and NL-only leagues for their power strokes, but be mindful that Howard will kill your average (.168/.236/.398 line with eight bombs). Joseph has limited upside in the current setup but has a much higher ceiling.

Phillies | Ryan Howard back in the lineup

Wed, 18 May 2016 07:32:11 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard returned to the lineup at cleanup Wednesday, May 18, with 1B Tommy Joseph sitting out.

Fantasy Tip: Joseph had a strong couple of games against two lefties. It looks like he's the right-handed complement to Howard now. Howard has four hits this month (.114), but three of them left the park. He's a boom-or-bust play against Tom Koehler.

Phillies | Tommy Joseph starting vs. Marlins

Mon, 16 May 2016 12:10:57 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Tommy Joseph is starting at first base and batting fifth against Miami Marlins SP Adam Conley Monday, May 16. 1B Ryan Howard is not in the starting lineup Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Howard rarely plays against left-handed pitchers, and with Joseph's promotion, you can expect him to see starts against lefties and maybe the odd right-handed arm. Joseph posted a .347/.370/.611 slash line through 100 plate appearances with Class AAA Lehigh Valley this season before joining Philadelphia, and he is a potential grab in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Phillies | Tommy Joseph making major league debut

Fri, 13 May 2016 14:05:00 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Tommy Joseph is starting at first base and is batting sixth against Cincinnati Reds SP Brandon Finnegan in his major league debut Friday, May 13. 1B Ryan Howard is starting on the bench against the left-hander. C Carlos Ruiz is in the cleanup spot.

Fantasy Tip: Joseph was tearing it up in the minors and is finally healthy after three concussions in previous seasons. He should at least platoon with Howard at first base and face and is worth the immediate pickup in dynasty and NL-only leagues. Ruiz has looked much better this year at the plate than last and is certainly worth a low-priced flier in daily formats if you're looking to save money at the position against Finnegan.

Phillies | Ryan Howard, Carlos Ruiz resting

Sun, 08 May 2016 08:35:07 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard and C Carlos Ruiz are out of the starting lineup against Miami Marlins SP Justin Nicolino Sunday, May 8. 1B Darin Ruf will bat cleanup and play first base, while C Cameron Rupp starts behind the plate and bats fifth. In addition, OF Tyler Goeddel will play left field and bat seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Rupp, Ruf and Goeddel should all be viewed as desperation sources of salary cap relief in daily fantasy games. Ruf has the most upside because of his career success versus lefties but he is hitting just .157 with three RBI in 57 at-bats this season.

Phillies | Ryan Howard taking the night off

Fri, 06 May 2016 13:38:23 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is not in the starting lineup against Miami Marlins left-handed SP Wei-Yin Chen Friday, May 6. 1B Darin Ruf is at first base and is hitting cleanup.

Fantasy Tip: Howard is hitting under .200 but does have seven home runs so far this year. In deep mixed formats he could be worth a look if you're in need of power. Ruf pummeled lefties last year to the tune of .371/.447/.660 with eight of his 12 home runs, and he makes for a nice sleeper selection in daily games.

Phillies | Ryan Howard takes a seat

Thu, 05 May 2016 08:20:37 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is out of the lineup Thursday, May 5, with 1B Darin Ruf hitting cleanup.

Fantasy Tip: Ruf is hitting just .163, but he has a good matchup against Jaime Garcia. Ruf crushed lefties to a .295-14-34 line in 227 at-bats before this season. He's a low-end streamer today.

Phillies | Ryan Howard snaps skid

Tue, 03 May 2016 23:26:09 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard ended an 0-for-12 skid with a home run Tuesday, May 3, against the St. Louis Cardinals. Howard has 22 homers in 66 career games against the Cardinals. He has hit 12 homers with 40 RBI in 36 games at Busch Stadium.

Fantasy Tip: Howard has a .190-6-11 line on the season, and you'll have to trade off some batting average for his home runs. He's a solid lower-middle first baseman if you're prepared for that.

Phillies | Ryan Howard goes deep

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 21:41:55 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, a double and two runs scored in a 4-3 win over the Cleveland Indians Friday, April 29.

Fantasy Tip: Howard is hitting just .214, but he does have five home runs. In NL-only leagues, his power can still be useful if you can absorb the blow to batting average.
