Rockies | Colorado closing candidates

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 11:30:10 -0700

With Colorado Rockies RP Jason Motte (shoulder) likely to start the year on the disabled list, RPs Jake McGee and Chad Qualls could be in play to handle the ninth inning, and RP Miguel Castro is another candidate.

Fantasy Tip: Manager Walt Weiss has been coy about naming a specific closer heading into the season, although most folks automatically assumed it would mainly be McGee, who Colorado traded for in the offseason. That's likely to be the case, but the Rockies could mix and match based on matchups. McGee is the closer to own in fantasy leagues, but because of the uncertainty he's more of an RP3.

Rockies | Closer-by-committee approach for Rockies?

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 15:10:07 -0800

Colorado Rockies RPs Jake McGee, Jason Motte, Chad Qualls and Adam Ottavino (elbow) are all candidates to pitch in the ninth inning, according to bullpen coach Darren Holmes. Holmes noted the bullpen will focus on retiring hitters at critical times and not predetermined roles.

Fantasy Tip: Bullpen by committees are a hassle for fantasy owners, and given the home venue in this discussion, the fantasy value is low for all four arms in the majority of leagues. However, it is also Friday, Feb. 5, so a lot can change before the season starts, and a full-time closer could emerge at some point. For the time being, though, proceed with caution when approaching this bullpen. Ottavino has the lowest value because he'll be for the majority of the first half of the season following Tommy John surgery last year.

Rockies | Two relievers headed to Colorado

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 06:33:30 -0800

Free-agent RP Jason Motte (Cubs) and Chad Qualls (Astros) reached two-year deals with the Colorado Rockies Tuesday, Dec. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Both righties could figure into the closing mix. Neither has the electric stuff to give fantasy owners confidence in taking a Rockies closer early, but both are worth consideration for a flyer as a high-end third reliever.

Astros | Chad Qualls reinstated

Fri, 10 Jul 2015 13:14:34 -0700

Houston Astros RP Chad Qualls (neck) was activated from the disabled list Friday, July 10, and SP Brett Oberholtzer was optioned to the minors in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Qualls should return to a setup role behind Luke Gregerson in the Houston bullpen. Gregerson hasn't been the most dominant reliever for the Astros this year, but he hasn't done anything to make the team think twice about using him in the ninth inning. Qualls is strictly a handcuff option for those that own Gregerson.

Astros | Chad Qualls could return Friday

Wed, 08 Jul 2015 17:03:20 -0700

Houston Astros RP Chad Qualls (neck) could be activated from the disabled list as soon as Friday, June 10. He threw one perfect inning in a rehab outing for Class AA Corpus Christi Tuesday, July 7, and is scheduled to make one more rehab appearance Thursday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: Outside of AL-only leagues that use the holds category, Qualls won't have much fantasy value when he returns from the DL. Luke Gregerson is the main Houston reliever for fantasy teams to own.

Astros | Chad Qualls has pinched nerve

Fri, 26 Jun 2015 14:08:28 -0700

Updating a previous report, Houston Astros RP Chad Qualls (neck) was put on the disabled list with a pinched nerve in his neck Friday, June 26. Qualls was 1-4 with four saves and a 5.11 ERA in 29 outings this year.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds as if this is an injury that could easily require more than the 15 days on the DL. Luke Gregerson remains the reliever to own for fantasy teams as Houston's closer, but both Pat Neshek and Josh Fields have pitched exceptionally well and can help owners with their pitching ratios in deeper leagues.

Astros | Chad Qualls heading to DL

Fri, 26 Jun 2015 11:30:20 -0700

Houston Astros RP Chad Qualls (undisclosed) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an undisclosed injury Friday, June 26.

Fantasy Tip: Luke Gregerson remains Houston's closer despite possessing probably the shakiest ninth-inning skills of the Astros' late-inning options. With Qualls sidelined, expect to see Pat Neshek or Josh Fields serve as the eighth-inning setup man to Gregerson.

Astros | Chad Qualls in line for save opps

Fri, 08 May 2015 17:12:55 -0700

Houston Astros RP Chad Qualls will serve as the team's closer if the lineup matches up in the ninth inning, according to manager A.J. Hinch.

Fantasy Tip: Gregerson is currently on the family medical emergency list, and he might not return until sometime next week. Only reach out to the waiver wire and grab Qualls in deep mixed or AL-only leagues if you're hurting for saves, since it'll likely just be a short-term stint in the closer role in the absence of Gregerson.

Astros | Three battling for Houston closer job

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 14:50:15 -0800

Houston Astros RPs Luke Gregerson, Chad Qualls and Pat Neshek will all be competing for the closer's job in spring training. Between all three relievers, they have only 95 career saves, with Qualls having 70 of them in 25 combined seasons.

Fantasy Tip: While Qualls has the most experience and most career saves, and he may start out the year as Houston's ninth-inning stopper, if you're drafting a Houston reliever for saves and upside, it should be Gregerson.

Astros | Luke Gregerson to close for Houston

Wed, 10 Dec 2014 09:57:13 -0800

Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson is expected to serve as the team's closer next season. Gregerson can make $21 million from his contract if he is the team's closer, according to a baseball source. RP Chad Qualls, who saved 19 games for the team last year, will likely move to a setup role.
