Fri, 13 Jun 2014 07:35:42 -0700

Fantasy Tip: He has a bit of rope in that beleaguered bullpen.

Astros | Bo Porter names Chad Qualls the closer

Fri, 16 May 2014 14:11:11 -0700

Houston Astros manager Bo Porter said RP Chad Qualls is his closer.

Fantasy Tip: This move was more or less already assumed, since Porter had announced a week ago that he'd use Qualls and Anthony Bass to close, and now Bass is on the disabled list. Qualls has been pitching better of late and should be owned in all leagues.

Astros | Chad Qualls, Anthony Bass to close

Fri, 02 May 2014 14:12:16 -0700

Houston Astros manager Bo Porter said RP Josh Fields will not pitch in high-pressure innings for a while. The team will go with a combination of RPs Chad Qualls and Anthony Bass to close, for now.

Fantasy Tip: Qualls started the year as the favorite to close out games with Jesse Crain (shoulder) on the DL, but a rough start ended those hopes. He'll get another shot, along with fellow righty Bass. Qualls has more experience in the role and should be your first target on the waiver wire. Bass is a consolation prize. None of these options particularly stick out, however, so don't rule out Fields or even Raul Valdes usurping Qualls or Bass before Crain returns later this month.

Astros | Jesse Crain has bursitis

Fri, 25 Apr 2014 14:08:56 -0700

Houston Astros RP Jesse Crain (shoulder) has developed bursitis, and his timetable for a return is no longer in early May. He will not be able to start throwing for another week to 10 days.

Fantasy Tip: Josh Fields should continue to see the majority of the save chances in the near future, with Chad Qualls as the primary backup option. If you've been stashing Crain, you'll have to wait a bit longer, but as this point he may not even be guaranteed the ninth-inning job when he returns.

Astros | Closer situation on a game-by-game basis

Wed, 02 Apr 2014 08:49:06 -0700

Updating a previous report, Houston Astros RPs Matt Albers, Chad Qualls and Joshua Fields will form the team's closer-by-committee, at least to start the year. In the team's opening day win over the New York Yankees Tuesday, April 1, RP Kevin Chapman stranded three inherited runners in the seventh before RP Chad Qualls induced a double-play groundball after the Yanks scored twice in the eighth. Albers worked a scoreless ninth in a non-save situation. "Tonight Qualls and Albers were able to get the job done," manager Bo Porter said. Porter said his choices in the late innings will depend on game circumstances and matchups.

Astros | Three in closer committee

Wed, 02 Apr 2014 06:49:31 -0700

Houston Astros RPs Chad Qualls, Matt Albers and Joshua Fields are amidst the team's closer committee. "A lot of it will depend on the match-ups," pitching coach Brent Strom said. "Obviously, with the one left-hander (Kevin Chapman) we have on the staff, Albers and Qualls qualify as left-handed pitchers given the repertoire and the way they throw. One of the things that Fields brings to the table is the strikeouts, which obviously is an important stat."

Fantasy Tip: Qualls is the safe bet because of his experience, but Fields is the wild card. He possesses a much liver arm and could be thrust into the role with early season success.

Astros | Using closer-by-committee

Mon, 24 Mar 2014 08:55:16 -0700

Houston Astros manager Bo Porter said the team will likely go with a closer-by-committee to start the season, as none of the five closing options including RPs Chad Qualls, Joshua Fields, Kevin Chapman, Matt Albers and Anthony Bass have separated themselves in the competition for ninth-inning duties. Qualls had appeared to be the favorite at the start of camp.

Fantasy Tip: Qualls is still probably the favorite to get the majority of looks in the ninth inning, and he's the only guy you should be looking to own to start the year. Jesse Crain will start the season on the DL, but once he's healthy, he could easily take the closing duties to himself.

Astros | Several options for closer

Mon, 17 Feb 2014 14:04:43 -0800

Houston Astros manager Bo Porter said RPs Jesse Crain, Chad Qualls and Matt Albers will be considered for closer this year, along with RP Joshua Fields. The team would ideally prefer to have one closer, but it may not be that way to start the year. Experience-wise, Qualls may have a leg up. Porter wants his closer to be able to induce weak groundballs, as well.
